It clearly a goat and looks quite a bit like one of my uncles on my moms side.

Goats make great guard dogs, no joke. Their the most vicious bloody minded creatures in the northern hemisphere. Pipped to the bloody minded'est in the world only by camels. They eat dromedaries for breakfast.

Great work on the text too Tom, keep it up.

Much tastier than lamb, too. Goat stew: yum yum.

Strangely, goat is very low in cholesterol, sheep is very high. Go figure.

Affirmative on the bloody mindedness of camels. I rode one for eleven days across the Thar Desert in Western India once. Miserable! Still, more comfortable that a goat for sitting on - if only just.

Crikey: it's a slow morning on the Forum, isn't it...?

Cheers - C

jamaican curried goat. My 3rd favourite curry.

Ceri what were you doing on a camel for 11 days? Was it a trip to some guitar shop outside of cairo?

Really, I wish it had been!

In fact, I was in the fabulous ancient Indian desert city of Jaisalmer out towards the Pakistan boarder. (Google for pix: it's great.)

The few travellers who used to make it out that far would take little camel tours for a couple of nights to go off and ride on sand dunes and sleep round the camp fire under the stars. Very picturesque: but I wanted something a little more authentic. I hired some camels and a couple of camel drivers and we set out to travel to the next significant city, Jodhpur, 300 km away.

I made the huge mistake of paying my guys by the day (I was very young), so their incentive was to drag the journey out as long as possible. It took 11 days. Exceedingly hard on the backside but also some unique experiences. Flocks of wild peacocks in the desert; mile after mile of giant sand dunes of a satisfyingly Lawrence of Arabia style; nights under the sky or spent in little mud hut villages drinking "desert whiskey" with solemn gentlemen in big turbans and enormous moustaches.

And an arrival at Jodhpur that made the crusaders' entry into Constantinople look like a visit to the corner shop.

Camels: been there, done that...

Cheers - C

C , bro , reminded me of ' the man who would be king ' and the age old question ' what three things should you stay away from when in the desert ' big turbans , enormous moustaches , desert whiskey !

Excellent, yes: I had The Man Who Would Be King much in mind that whole trip. A very "Englishman abroad" type scene - especially as I wore a straw boater most of the way.

Started that journey clean-shaven: ended it with the beginnings of a Stalinesque moustache on the way. I loved that moustache but when I got home months later my then girlfriend begged me to lose it. Very Freddie Mercury...

C , bro , my other englishman abroad fav. - a man called horse ! which then begs the question of what to avoid when in the american wilderness ' anyone who calls you horse ' although not as much as someone who calls you lunch .
