I mean come on it is tie between them and Paul Reed Smith when it comes to overpriced Guitars over 2,500 Dollars for a Les Paul?.

I know this is a Fender forum and i have said many times i am not gonna buy Gibson but would it not be funny while Fender is raising prices Gibson mysteriously starts lowering?

They are pretty high priced. That's why I don't have one yet. 8)

Same here but just saying since Fender is considered the working mans guitar and Gibson is considered the over privileged do nothing but sit on a disk Johnny Guitar, How funny would it be for them to switch places.

No offense to any Office workers.

I'd probably buy one of the SGs I've wanted. At 30% off, they'd be in the (2008 pricing anyway) range of the AmStd Teles and Strat I have.

if they lowered their prices by 30% they would still be overpriced... dont get me wrong i own two and like them very much; but.....they are way over priced...........its like paying 500 dollars for a bottle of booze....just not smart... if your looking to get drunk you could buy a good bottle for 20 bucks..........same in the guitar world....Gibson's prices are a victim of their large amount of ad campian....fender is going along the same route....dont belive me....look at the amout of Sig guitars they have now and the great lenghts they are going to for Proffesional endorsers...

Sadly it is true mate, Fender used to be the working mans guitar and now it is caving in to the over privileged.

+1 -- That is exactly right. Even back in 1980, a Tabacco-sunburst Les Paul seemed to cost so much. That was stupid -- I should have bought one back then. At least I was smart enough back then to pick up my awesome '76 SG Std, though. So, all is not lost...

PRS makes some gorgeous Gibson LP and LS-type models that put Gibson in the shade considering that both charge premium prices.

Gibson's uneven build quality and finish and lack of attention to woodworking details is unacceptable in a $2-5K price range. Lots of '07-08 necks with orange peel nitro and rough rosewood fingerboards which you hardly ever see in a high-end Fender. The pickups and pots that Gibson specs for its models in the upper-end are generally fine quality, but I've read complaints elsewhere about poorly fitted bridges and cheap-looking Kluson-style tuners. Gibson seriously needs to lower their prices by half and get back to basics serving the working musician, not the investor-collector crowd.

The most impressive Gibson I've encountered in recent years is a small-bodied, very light-weight (about 7 lbs) CS-336 (2008) with vintage burst and a street price of $2400. I loved the CS-336's ample U-shaped mahogany neck - very close to my AVRI Strat and Tele, but the fingerboard radius is almost flat like my Martins and Yamaha classical. Gibson volume and tone controls have far more dynamic range than on a stock AVRI Tele, much closer to my 57 AVRI "Mary Kay" Strat. Despite its smaller size, the CS-336 has that signature fat humbucker tone, ambience, warmth, and sustain through a DRRI with volume set at 4-5. Action was medium-high although the humbucker covers don't give me as much finger-picking room as Fender's low profile Alnico single-coil pups. The CS-336 has a nut width of 1.687"/1.062" at the 12th fret and a scale length of 24.75".

IMHO, the only Gibsons that could justify a $2K+ street price today are those that feature rare bookmatched quilted maple tops and highest-grade Honduras mahogany for one-piece bodies and necks. For $2k+ you should also get a bone or FWI nut, genuine abalone inlay dots or snowflakes and an ebony fingerboard. F-hole carving should be smooth and graceful before the black paint is applied.

Eventually, Fender and Gibson will need to make changes in model lineup and price structure in the face of growing unemployment and the long-term loss of decent American, Canadian and UK-European working and middle class jobs. Deliver better quality control and a lower sub-$2K street price and I wouldn't hesitate to consider a CS-336 in the future.

I don't know why, but I feel Fender cares more about there customers, and Gibson is all snotty. I just think Fender is a more friendly and warm.

Obviously, Gibson cares less about customer satisfaction or they would strive to be more consistent in wood selection, woodworking, build-assembly, and finish. C'mon, with CNC routers and a well-trained and well-paid workforce to operate the machines, why does Gibson have so many stupid QC issues compared to Fender, Martin, Taylor, PRS, Yamaha, etc.? I'm afraid that Gibson's reputation for inconsistent quality is ingrained in their corporate DNA. The CS-336 is proof that Gibson can produce a world-class affordable guitar for the serious musician if they put their minds to it.

I've never dealt with Gibson but based on personal and anecdotal evidence: Fender, Martin and Taylor offer the best CS support in the musical instrument industry.

What I don't understand is when I was a kid in the sixties the more features and better woods you used on a guitar the more the price went up.What does it say about a company(Gibson)when they take a guitar like a Les Paul BFG or a Exploer with holes cut in it and a cheap finish and charge more than the guitars that are made well. Then again I think the Roadhouse series is a joke and that G.C. will be selling them for next to nothing eventually.
I love my Gibson and my Fenders but my Hamer is made better than any of them are.
