As the title of my post suggests, I want a new band. The band is just not for me. I want to form one for my son. The tough part is that he is only 8. Either me or the wife would have to be at all practices. He can't legally play bars. I figure the band could at least play all seasons except winter at fairs, or outdoor events.

Any ideas as to how I might go about starting such a band. Reese is greatly wanting to perform in a band. We know he is still developing as a guitarist and a person, but feel that the practice for live performances will put a lot of polish on his playing. If the band wanted to just jam for a year, that would be OK. That's as long as all the members agreed on it.

Do any of you have any experience with a youth (not yoot) band? I guess the band could have teens, or adults, as long as they don't mind having fewer gigs and a kid in the band. Any ideas could be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest taking him to Dayjams summer camp, or something similar. It's not an overnight camp. It's where kids yet to form a band and learn about their instruments, and at the end of the week play an original song in a concert. It was lots of fun and it really helped me when I was starting out. It's great, and I've gotten so much good band experience from it.

Thanks texasguitarslinger - Looks like a fun program. Also looks like there's not one near the Atlanta area. Thanks for the idea though.

Hmmm ... sometimes it's tough enough for us "grownups" to find bands.

Anyway, I imagine it would be hard for an adult band to want to take an 8 year old, and kids in his age group pretty much aren't ready yet.

The band camp idea sounds like a good one, if you can find something like that in your area.

Do you have time after school or evenings? Maybe look into sponsoring a school or community band club for kids. Have local kids come once a week to learn/jam and works towards an end of year or summer concert. Just trying to be creative here ...

You may want to check with some guitar teachers too. Here in the area of LA where I live, a coworker's three kids are all in age-appropriate bands put together by their teacher.

She usually has 4 - 6 bands going at a time, and one of her groups is something like 8 - 10 year olds. She works with a local drum teacher and another who teaches keyboards, though the bands are usually just guitar, bass, drums format.

Even better, she arranges at least one night a quarter where the various groups all play in a live venue. It's mostly parents of course, but the nights are open to the public. They try to make the venue as realistic as possible and at least here, they can arrange bars and restaurants as long as enough parents are official chaperones. All in all, a very cool thing.

Another coworker is working through a local school and the '"Y" along similar lines -- get kids playing togehter, etc. There too, he says, the key is getting parents involved when it comes to coming up with opportunities to play in front of people.

In terms of a professional band playing in bars, at least in New York (years ago), youth acts were able to get waivers if they were willing to join the local AFM. This was strictly up to the bar of course, but if they felt they could insure that the band wasn't drinking, they could book. I know that for fact because the band I was in was playing bars when we were all 16 or 17. We did have to sit at table or some other accomodation away from the bar, etc.

I'm in the movie biz now, where similarly a bona fide youth act or peformer can get a waiver under certain circumstances that would ordinarily require you to be 21. So you might also want to check with a nearby AFM local to see what they say.

tomk62 - I don't really have nights. I work 2nd shift. The Atlanta School of Rock may work. We're talking about it. Thank you for the info.

Also, there's another place called Planet Rock. I believe it may cost more than TSOR. The owner is going to audition Reese whenever I can make an appointment. He said that he manages careers too. I would never go for any long term mgmt. agreement.

ironiguana - This camp looks good, but the wife will never go for it. She doesn't want someone preaching to our son about another religion.

Drjohnthebassman - Power chord academy looks cool. If we lived nearer to Dallas or Washington & Reese were at least 12 years old, I think we could do it.

phillip602 - That will probably work well if I can find a teacher who does that kind of thing. I'll look into it.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. These are good ideas.

Yes, he played his 2nd grade talent show last year and is working on his set for this year. I don't think they get prizes, ribbons, or anything. They just obtain great experience performing in front of a crowd.

Reese is a little ham. He played for his first grade class, 2nd grade class, after moving - the whole 2nd grade @ the new school, and has already played for the whole 3rd grade this year. I recorded his last performance and put it on youtube. However, the principal called me and asked me to remove it. Some would wish to not be on the video.

We don't know anyone else in his grade who plays an instrument. I'll get Reese to ask his music teacher if a 5th grader might play an instrument. That might work out. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks SBLS, but I am not really trying to market Reese as a talent, per se. What he really wants is to participate as a working part of a working band. I would hate to see him tangled up in that "star-making" crap that happens to alot of those kids. Reese loves hard rock. The Disney and Nickelodeon kids play bubblegum music. No offense, but Reese hates that crap.

The guy with Planet Rock in Atlanta offered to give Reese an audition. He didn't say for what. I figured it would be good for Reese to get used to auditions. Afterwards, if the man has something interesting to offer, we'll listen. If not, maybe he'll have some constructive advice to offer. Either way, it is a win for Reese.

What do you think?

Bro , i think you're great ! you are in control ! my tendency is to look at the getting hired aspect (music as a large part of an even larger part called entertainment industry) so , all of the other bros posts have been great let us know which one (camp or school) you choose for Reese's band, have fun bros !

It is good to do that for your son. I am sure if you go to big city areas you can find places that aren't actually bars. I mean in Tulsa, where I live. There are so many places it isn't funny. I mean of course in Tulsa you have the higher end places like: BOK Center, Brady Theater, Cain's Ballroom but you have smaller places too like The Marquee and The Collective. The point is there are places out there. Some of them are too small to have a website but the best thing to do is to go to like a Guitar Center or a music store and ask around. Most likely, they will give you options on places to play.
