I'm surprised nobody said it yet.....Stairway to Heaven! A beautiful and complex song in it's own right, that is simple enough that any beginner with some patience can slowly figure out. Learning that song, and being able to see the pattern of how Page put that progression together blew my mind and conmpletely changed the way I looked at writing guitar.

No criticism from here, tho Ov is not a fave when it comes to acoustic.

Neil Diamond and Paul Simon and The Eagles are also fun stuff for playing on an acoustic.

And forget not, "Judy Blue Eyes," CSN&Y

I am currently trying to learn Bad Company's "Seagull". Nice, melodic.

Nice acoustic! I've been considering an ovation for my next purchase. As for acoustic songs, I'd have to suggest anything by Jack Johnson. Most of his songs are just barre chords. Give em a go!

Karma Police by Radiohead is quite a hoot to play on acoustic. Sounds great when you get it down. :D

Try "mama im commin home" by Ozzy Osborne. This song works on chord progressions and alternate picking. I believe it is pretty easy. 8)

First let me say you'll get no issues from me on Ovations. Ovation is just one of the those brands that people either really love or really hate...personally I love them.

As far as tunes go, since you said you're working on Wish You Were Here (great acoustic tune btw), here's some other classic rock ideas for you...

A lot of early stuff by Heart (although check out "The Road Home" for even more ideas...Barracuda rocks on acoustic!), Neil Young ("Hey Hey, My My", "Old Man", etc), John Mellencamp ("Pink Houses", Crumblin' Down", "Jack & Diane"), early Eagles stuff ("Take It Easy", "Lyin' Eyes"), America ("Horse With No Name"...2 chords...easy as it gets), Don McClain ("American Pie"...a bit long, but good tune), Fleetwood Mac often works good on acoustic, Jimmy Buffet ("Margarittaville" is a great stage tune!), Clapton, etc.. As someone else said, folk is another good place to work from...look up stuff like Joni Mitchell, Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, etc., and you'll find some real classics there!

Now honestly, unless you're doing something like "metal" (or thrash or grunge, etc), you don't really need to put a huge mental barrier between electric and acoustic stuff. There's a lot of stuff that's traditionally done on electric that can sound just as good (if not better) done on acoustic...take Clapton's "Layla" for instance. His acoustic jam on that is simply incredible. Same thing with the live version of "Hotel California" the Eagles did a while back...simply wonderful. If you can find it, check out Pete Townsend's acoustic version of "Pinball Wizard" from "The Secret Policman's Other Ball"...some really great stuff on that album. Just look up the term "unplugged" and you can find a lot of material like this that translates very well to acoustic.

I could go on with -lots- more, but that should give you something to work with for a bit :D.

L8r,
Jim

I agree with the beatles suggestion blackbird, rocky raccoon, mother natures son, all playable. mother natures son was one of the the first songs I learned way back when. I just bought a yamaha gigmaker starter set a few weeks ago (a little tough to play) went on to buy an epi special 2 and a 98 strat used. I just started playing after 31 years and actually went for the electrics so I can play without waking up everyone in the house early am. Thank god for headphones but I do like the sound of an acoustic. Since getting the fender though I don't play the other 2 much.
