Hello Guys,

Now, I'm with a lot of people when I say I don't really like the idea of relicing your guitar, and that it should only be stressed, dinged, rubbed and all that through the owner's personal use over time.

I know all about the differences between Nitrocellulose and Poly finishes, but the one question I have, is will the neck tint underneath all that lacquer? I know it won't wear away like Nitro ones will, but my strat has quite a light coloured wood and I'd much rather it was darker. I've heard putting it in the sun helps but again, am not sure if it's the case with Poly finishes.

Thanks very much, any help would be really really appreciated!!

E.D.

Over time light will tint it. It has with my mexican strats neck. Its hard to see unless you remove the neck then it shows up on the heel.

The wood will in fact tint over time, as long as the poly doesn't obstruct it.
As long as you have clear on it the wood will discolour. In fact it may bleach, rather than darken.

You won't get the same effect as old style nitro, because the old lacquer was photoreactive, whereas poly really isn't. On old necks, the wood itself doesn't change colour much, it was the Nitro that yellowed so much.

I'd have thought that's the same with polyurethane too, albeit to a lesser degree. I'm sitting here looking at a 12 year old urethane covered maple fingerboard. It was milky white when new (which I rather liked): now it is a pale golden. Nothing like as dark as the "honey tint" makers use to emulate old nitro coated necks, but still very nice.

I'm sure it is the urethane that has tinted, not the timber underneath. But I ain't about to strip it to prove the matter!

Cheers - C

It probably is the urethane. But I guess my point is that (especially the old style,))Nitrocellulose is way more photo reactive than poly.

i might have to pull the neck on my 94 strat, and see what kind of colour change there has been.
