Hi guys and gals, I have always heard of certain rivalry between gibson guitars and fender guitars ... I have a few strats and I have never owned a gibson... but I also hear good things about them... is fender better than gibson ? and why? :)

A lot of people will tell you "yes." It is however a Fender forum...not exactly the best place to ask this question. The truth though, is that they are both great guitars for different reasons, and if you own both you get the best of both worlds :D. Fender is mainly good for quack, twang, bell-like, and trebly sounds while Gibson is good for raunchy, thick, heavy, bassier sounds. That's just my 2 cents.

I dont think you can compare the two as far as picking which one is "better." - I have always played Fender, since I was 16, 33 now, and thats all I have ever played - I got this wild hair last year to get a LP Studio, it was a piece of crap, didnt like it, played bad, so the LP bug left me - Well, my g/f ended up buying me a 08 LP Standard (Goldtop) and I absolutely love this guitar - it plays great and is simply a great guitar - however, its completely different than any of my strats - its a completely different animal - plays amazing, has SERIOUS balls to it, big thick neck, its mean - sorry for not really answering your question! lol

Now, to start another debate - In my opinion, my PRS is the best playing guitar I own - LOL!! Does that make me favor it over my LP and my collection of strats, NOPE!!

Haha try going to the Gibson forum and asking that question. It all comes down to what you like. I like a thinner neck, therefore I play a Fender Tele. I got a LP Studio for $300, near mint condition, and after seeing it collect dust for two years I sold it. Would have been a great investment had I kept it, but I wanted a Strat. :P

Is a window better than a chimney?

Change window and chimney with the two guitar makes and its still the same question.

in the guitar world gibsons are as different from fenders as windows are from chimneys.

both have their uses, both are very good at what they do, and both are too different to be compared in that respect.

You decide what music you want to play, you go out and try a whole bunch of guitars, fender, gibson, ibanez, washburn, etc etc etc.

When you find the guitar that fits you, giving what YOU think the best sound, feel, weight etc etc you buy that guitar.

Its a fair question for a n00b, but could start a bit of a flame war as has done in the past.

i have a strat, and i have a loan of a lp, i found the neck seems to be thiner than the strat, i.e i can get more of my hand around it, and the strings closer together, it's not as good for bends and accents but, would be easyer for faster picking i would imagine, (im not good enough to apreciate how well it performs!)

i personaly prefer the strat for my style of play

I own three Fender guitars, and two Gibson guitars. I love them all equally, and would never part with them. It's horses for courses

They are very different altogether, you can start to compare right at the neck joint, bolt on vs. set, and go from there. I think they both have their place in music history. Personally I prefer Fender, now I will admit I did fall off the Fender wagon recently. I THOUGHT I have always wanted a Gibson, so I bought a new Gibson Les Paul Traditional Model, let me say the quality is very good. It plays extreamly well, I just can't get used to it - at all. I have played Fender guitars for so long it just doesn't feel right to me. My 52 tele & 57 strat are my babies. With that said, I wish I could return the Gibson, it but I can't, it's too late. It's not flawed in any way, I just love the feel of my Fenders and I love the solid maple neck - all personal preferences. So I am selling the Les Paul and when I do sell it, I'm going to buy a Fender Jazzmaster American Vintage RI OR a 57 Hotrod Tele.
So there you have it, from someone that owns both.

Which brand is better?? The saga continues.

I own both too! As has been said many times they both have good and bad qualities. It's comparing apples to oranges!

Fender is not better than Gibson, but my dad is bigger than your dad... :P

I'm just saying this thread reminds me of those type of discussions....

I would like to quote Bruce Lee. He said one time about martial arts "It is not what you know, it is how you use it,"

For this topic allowed myself to change it to
Quote:
It is not what you own, its how you use it.
8) now that's deep.

Exactly -- I went thru the same thing in reverse when I bought my first Strat. Being a longtime Gibson player, the Strat seemed so foreign. Now I am cool with both, but it took a while to get there.

Fender and Gibsons both are awesome, but I think lower-end Fenders are more complete guitars than lower-end Gibsons.
