We're on page three of this post and geminikilla hasn't replied to any of these comments. Just curious to what he decided to do?!

Church bands are demanding when you don't have the option of rehearsing, sometimes someone just shows up and you end up playing something for the first time.
This means that you need to be able to play different styles, when to fill in the background, when to let it rip.
Its also the easiest way to play live.
Musicians like me are a sneaky bunch where we can manipulate the volume, key or tempo.
Musicians are also the vehicle for a change in the material, if you don't play blues, nobody will ever sing the blues, jazz-jazz, rock-rock.
When a congregation sees you master all genres, sooner or later someone works up the courage to try something new.
So, whatever your mindset or if you swear like a sailor when you start, don't be surprised if you stick around.

You're kidding, right?

geminikilla is a troll. He posted this to see how much trouble he could stir up. Check out this terrific set of caricatures of Flame Warriors:

... and pay particular attention to the listing for "Enfant Provocateur" and the net war weapon called a "Grenade."

Jeez, you guys really swallowed the hook on this one.

I've played in secular bands since I was 16, and in church bands over the last 10 or so. (in mid 40's now)

There is a load of experience that comes from playing in a bar on Sat night to church on Sunday morning. Much more versatility with the Sunday am service, why? Because the songs are not "known" so we can rock them up or tone them down, we have another guitarist who will play my bass so I get to jump to acoustic from time to time.

Treat it as a learning experience and go in with an open mind and you'll get something out of it. But don't waste the time of others if you find that it's just not your thing.

Perhaps when germinikilla gets old enough to drive, he will also start thinking of the commitment required for church band and its upsides, vs. the lure of "social life"...

... and have an even tougher decision. Or not.

Oh, church girls are the best incentive for musicians to stick around...
why deny it?

Wow. This thread really took off while I was gone. Lol. I decided to join after all. Altough the songs are incredibly lame and boring. I get to go wild when the sermon is over. If only for a little while. And for the record I do believe in God. I just don't like church

Alot of you pussies are overly sensitive about this subject and you've made me seem like some sort of f*cken anti-christ. I never said anything bad about God. I just said singing to him seems kind of dumb to me :D

I play in a church band and must say, as a Christian, it is a tremendously rewarding experience. Our band has four singers which harmonize so well it brings tears. There are two of us guitar players and we generally switch off playing acoustic and lead. The drummer and bass player are also very good. Granted, worship music can tend to be redundant and easy at times but it is, after all, designed that way for the audience to easily sing along.

You might want to look to the Bible for the answer to that question. Might I suggest these passages:

Psalm 95
Psalm 150:3

Are the singers male of female?

Three are female, one is male.

We have two female singers. They sound pretty good. I'm thinking of stealing one of 'em and starting a side project of my own

and then you can possibly be effective but in your current spiritual state, you are a mess.
