Playing in a church band is a spiritual as well as musical experience. As said above, you learn to learn fast, up to 5 new songs per week in this experience (137 Masses and services in 2 1/4 years).

A church band requires house-band gigging musician's commitment, being there every time a Mass or service features your choir / group / ensemble, and practices.

That said, the overall experince is well worth the price, in this opinion.

If you are not ready for that level of musical and social maturity, at this time it might be best to let them find someone else and (you) enjoy playing in the bedroom or with pals.

Best of fortune and good on you for even considering a church band at what appears to be an exeptionally young age.

I've been in Church bands that were like that, where no one had their heart in it and they only played the lamest songs on earth. And if you brought in a moderately rocking song they all say "wow, that sounds too much like rock for Church". I quit that band, it was torment.

Haha, what? "That sounds to much like rock for church"? Geez, my church loves to rock!

I somehow get the idea that you wouldn't quite fit into a church band.

What would you do when it comes to Communion? Refuse or share so no one looks at you strange? Communion is a sacred ritual and some churches believe that one unbeliever sharing Communion invalidates the whole ceramony for everyone.

My question is should I join just to have the expierence or should I tell 'em to f*ck off? Since I can only play with the drummer during church hours and a hour afterward

No offense to any Christians in here but Christian rock is Sacrilege.

As an Atheist and a Rock purest i will tell you not to play with those Bands.

Worship Music is quite a bit different then being in a secular band Ive done both. There are alot of simularities too.
There are quite a few 'Worship' songs that are as complex and challenging as any songs in secular music.
However if your not doing it for the right reasons nothing much will come of it for you or the Worship Team.
Ideally A Worship musician should be motivated by a desire to express something spiritually as well as just wanting to play.
You should be able to find other musicians to play with if you just want to have fun and gain experience playing with other musicians.
Nothing wrong with that.

One thing about a worship team it is a challenge and a great learning experience one of those'you better get better real quick or forget it' situations.
Things can drive you nuts.
Guns and Roses or the Who or The Pretenders may have had more personality band drama then your average worship team but I wouldnt put money on it.
Rehearsals are usually non existant or a train wreck.
But inspite of all that to have your Worship leader walk up to you onstage and go "I know youve never heard of this song but it's in this Key and the Chord Progression goes like this. O.K?... were playing it in front of 300 people in two minutes."
Then against all odds it works.
And you can watch it working...on people who are actually listening to you instead of drinking and talking and chatting up women.
That can be rewarding and growing experiense for any player.

That was a weird ultra-traditional Church, which is why I found a better one that lets me break into a guitar solo (complete with wah pedal) every so often. :D Plus they actually take song suggestions into consideration, and most bands really don't care about what the 16-year-old says. Christian or secular. So yeah, if you find a Church band you like it can be very rewarding.

Do not join! It is supposed to be worship not cursing! Repent and get right with God
and then you can possibly be effective but in your current spiritual state, you are a mess.

I am going to say it straight out, you do not ever use the f-word when talking about GODS church. Grow up and learn some respect.

I just dont get why people seeking to gig view worship as a valid gig. Worship in itself should be between 2 people only, yourself and your God.
Lets keep Holy, Holy and worldly, worldy. That way we all know where we stand.

Remember what HE said, 'if your luke warm i'll spit you out. I'd rather you were cold'.

'Dunno about that.

'Often pack up the bass after Mass feeling like it was really a serious spititual / worship experience.

Yes, 600 to 1500 other people were also there. But the player-self-participation in the service or Mass was just a huge spiritual experience.

What each of us should give a bit of thought to; we are likely at quite a few different stages of our individual spiritual life-journeys. 'Seen the 49 steps in a few places and it made enormous sense to this soul.

Totaly but the part of any member of a worship band should be accompanied by personal worship time, not instead of.

Why a church band would take a non-believer onto a worship band is beyond me. Evangelism is a good thing but is this the right method? The OP has no desire to worship God and as previously stated seems to think quite little of the people involved.

Agreed--

Now different churches will do it differently--so this experience may not be the norm, but at least use some respect--no reason to use obscenities either.

If it's not your thing--don't accept--and look for something that is your thing.

Praise and worship music is made for praise and worship, not to be showy (I've been in a praise band a long time, trust me). If your heart isn't in it, then don't do it, that's the biggest factor.
