I was recently invited to play for a church after I played a few songs with the pastors son (a drummer) I had fun playing "Paranoid" and "whole lotta love" and I never really played with a drummer before and it was f*ckin fun. When I went back two weeks later to try out the songs they want me to play are so g*y. One of the songs is "I love god" and all they want me to play is the C chord for five f*cken minutes. My question is should I join just to have the expierence or should I tell 'em to f*ck off? Since I can only play with the drummer during church hours and a hour afterward

I'm a church musician. One skill you will learn is to learn fast. Typically you get one rehearsal before Sunday. Then you won't play those songs again for months. This is an important skill for studio musicians and union call gigs.

There is also the joy of playing for large appreciative crowds.

I also agree with the previous poster about respect.

Blessings,

Join for gigging experience because it's different than playing for family or neighbors. Give the F word a break at the church but work in the F chord and some pentatonic solos. Whatever chord the songs in you can play a solo that fits that will sound good just play in that key, and c works great.

Some peoples ignorance simply amazes me! Or should I said, f*ckin amazes me

I played guitar in a Church praise & worship band - it was cool, they had this HUGE PA system, I plugged my POD into it, sounded like a wall of Marshall's - was pretty cool!

Don't get involved if your heart's not in it. You can jam somewhere else with the drummer, it's not worth going through if you have no say on what you or the rest of the band plays.

I've been in Church bands that were like that, where no one had their heart in it and they only played the lamest songs on earth. And if you brought in a moderately rocking song they all say "wow, that sounds too much like rock for Church". I quit that band, it was torment.

Now I'm in a Church band that's at least open to new ideas. We played a rock song (finally) last week. And they don't mind it when I try to add an Albert King riff somewhere, or decide to use my wah pedal. That other band I was talking about would have had a stroke if I did that with them. In fact, we're going to work up several more non-lame rock songs soon, and I'm actually having fun.

This happened to me not too long ago. I'm not a Christian, nor do I even believe in God, but I took the gig anyways because for starters, what's the point of playing music if you can't share it with people? Even if the songs are lame or incredibly easy, it gives you some kind of experience with playing in front of an audience. A forgiving audience at that, they aren't going to turn to each other and say "Wow that guy sucks" because they aren't there for the music. So when you get into a rock band and start playing shows, you'll have some familiarity with how it feels to have people watching you.
Just my two cents.

Why a church band would take a non-believer onto a worship band is beyond me. Evangelism is a good thing but is this the right method? The OP has no desire to worship God and as previously stated seems to think quite little of the people involved.

This doesn't seem like the best gig for you. Politely decline and suggest that they would be better off with someone else.

First time I ever played live was in a church when I was 12. Yes, initially I thought it to be lame, in retrospect, it was a valuble experience. Churches have some killer acoustics (usually) and it's really good experience. Not to mention, it may broaden your playing ability.

Per your post, you apparently are not interested in the purpose of the gig and are only interested in your personal gratification.

Objectively speaking, I'd defer to another guitarist who would truly appreciate the opportunity and search elsewhere for playing situations which would satisfy you.

Incidentally, you really should lose the potty mouth as youngsters do indeed read this forum.

I'm going to have to agree with many other posts here and say not to do it if your heart isn't in it. It is good for learning purposes (which I can say from experience) but there isn't much point if you're going to hate the songs and are there just to play.

As for song selection, it really depends on the kind of church you are in. Mine does just about anything from traditional songs to newer Israel Houghton type stuff. No one complains when I solo or when I turn on my distortion pedal to add to them either. I guess it just depends on the people.

My advice to you would be to expand your vocabulary, grow up and stop depending on the F bomb for every other word in a sentence. Oh, and tell the Pastor's son he needs to look at people with at least a modicum of respect to play in church.
There's your first new word... modicum - and look! Not one F bomb...

Hey StratHeads-

It's early in the morning and with my warm cup of Joe .....I must add my 2 cents.-

You just might find this experience very rewarding if you give it a chance. However it doesn't sound like you are ready to play with others...Church band or other. A Band is a team and you MUST work together. Sometimes that means playing something you don't like OR taking a backseat so that someone else can shine. Case in Point-

I cant stand playing "Sweet Home Alabama" anymore- I play rhythm on it while my band mate does the lead- We have played it for years and years...every Gig..because the people love it. The dance floor always fills up and the crowd of drunks always sing along. I swallow my PRIDE and play it...Once I get into it I start enjoying it again.

You need to let go of that Pride before you are ready to play with any band. You also need to not see everything so negative- If you give it a chance you just may learn something...both musically and Spiritually-

The Freeze
