I went during the summer. It was pretty cool. I prefer the EMP in Seattle to tell you the truth. There's barely any Jimi Hendrix stuff at the HOF. Cool place though. I liked the Pink Floyd Exhibit a lot.

I Like the HOF. Lots of cool stuff on display and I agree that the Pink Floyd exhibit is killer. It is not the most interesting place for kids though, so if you plan on bringing the kids, there is a really cool science center right next store that they may find enjoyable.

I went last October. I thought it was worth seeing. I was disappointed that there were no progressive groups represented (Rush, Yes, etc.) and I would have liked to have seen more Zappa stuff. But there are some great exhibits. We were in there around five hours. My wife was a real trooper.

Well as a Clevelander (Lorain, Ohio actually), I've been there several times over the years. I think the HOF does have some truly wonderful exhibits and it's certainly worth taking an afternoon to see everything they have to offer. As my wife said, "you will drool", LOL!!!

That said, I have a couple of issues with the Rock Hall as well. First I think they are -way- over priced. This year I think they are up to $19 per person. Considering the Great Lakes Science Center right next door is only $9 per person ($14 if you include an Omnimax show), the Cleveland Museum of Natural is $9 and the Cleveland Museum of Art is -free-...I think the R&RHOF is a tad bit high. You are also NOT allowed to take pictures anywhere in the Rock Hall accept the main lobby...as a photographer, a musician and a music lover, I find this VERY disappointing.

If you are reasonably local and have never been there, it's certainly worth a visit...it is a pretty cool place with a lot of stuff to see. On the other hand if you are coming in from out of town specifically to see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I really don't think it's -that- big a deal to warrant the trip. If you are coming to Cleveland for other things as well...the other museums, the zoo (which is a mess right now), Playhouse Square and all the other wonderful things Cleveland has to offer, then yes, the Rock Hall does make a nice addition and is worth the visit, but I wouldn't drive too far (let alone fly in) for -just- the Rock Hall itself.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

I think the hall would be a cool place to visit, but honestly, the people who run it are complete jokes. When will Deep Purple, Kiss, and many, many others, most importantly, RUSH get the deserved nod???! What the hell?

No, they spring for Madonna and the Beastie Boys? They must be high.

Thanks for your opinion! I've been trying to organize a trip for several years when I visit family and friends in the east. It would ultimately consist of 5 people, two of whom have little interest in rock or music in general but now knowing there's a science museum nearby, I have a solution for all. We'd also check out two or three of the wineries I pass by each year along I-90, so the trip wouldn't be just for the HOF.

First let me say that I do think the Great Lakes Science Center is a wonderful place...in fact my wife and I were just there last week. A good majority of the exhibits are geared towards being educational for children but as such, a good majority of the exhibits are "hands on" (meaning you can touch/play with them) and can be a lot of fun for adults too! Of course the Omnimax theater is also wonderful...it's like watching a moving inside of a planetarium! LOL!!!

On the wineries...do your research before you head out. While Ohio does have some wonderful wineries with some genuine award winning wines, several of the wineries along I-90 just West of Cleveland are...ummm...kind of a joke (particularly those in the Avon Lake area). -Very- small family owned operations that really don't have much to offer your typical tourists. They are good for picking up a good bottle or two for much less than you would pay retail, but that's about it. Granted I haven't been to all of them by any means, but it's been my experience that the best wineries here in Ohio are those up around the islands, out East towards the PA border (around the Geneva area) and down South towards Marietta/Zanesville. Seriously...either look them up online or call them directly before you plan your visit so you don't end up wasting too much time with the rinky-dink operations.

Peace,
Jim

I agree, some of their choices are not my cup of tea. I'm not sure how the induction process works but I feel it is a little slanted. Even so there is still some cool stuff.

I was there on the opening day back in the 90's. It was very cool, although the opener was very badly planned. After waiting on line for hours and hours to get in, we had to rush through the museum in order to be able to get to the big concert at Cleveland Stadium. The concert was amazing. A whole lifetime's worth of performers in one night.

The thing I remember most about the musuem was seeing one of Hendrix's strats up close. Also they had the whole Allman Brothers actual stage setup on display, including all the guitars, amps, B-3, etc.

The Hendrix Strat...if it's the same guitar I'm thinking of, I think it's one of the permanent displays as I've seen it every time I've been there. I really have mixed feelings about that guitar. On the one hand, it is very cool that they do have it on display for everyone to come and see. On the other hand....it breaks my heart to see that thing behind glass like that knowing that it will probably never get played again. I guess you could call me something of a pragmatic sentimentalist but to me the sole purpose for any musical instrument is to be played (ok...maybe not a tuba...). More over that specific guitar just screams to be played. I've often wondered if late at night, long after the doors are locked, if the Rock Hall staff pops those cases open and just sits around and jams on some of those axes....probably not, but it's nice to think of it that way.

On a different note, once my wife and I attended an "all nite jam" at the Rock Hall...we had actually gone there to play but never got the chance because the place was just packed. We did however get to go thru the Rock Hall at 3 in the morning and practically no one else was going thru the museum....very cool to say the least. No one I should say except security...I almost got us thrown out because I tried to touch Pete Townsend's Hiwatt amp that's on display! LOL!!! I honestly wasn't going to do anything to it...I just wanted to touch it. I dunno...maybe see if some of the Townsend magic would rub off or something (I know...it sounds silly). I looked around and there wasn't anybody else there and just as I reached over the railing, security stepped around the corner. (Sigh.....)
