With all of the "greatest guitarist" threads going around, it gets kind of boring reading Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, etc, etc. over and over again. Who are some of the newer guitar players that you find refreshing and talented?

Me personally, it'd be:
Chris Cheney - The Living End
Matthew Bellamy - Muse
Randy Strohmeyer - Finch

How about you guys? Who brings that Clapton/Beck/Gallagher vibe back? (Not implying that these legends are replacable)

Ill have to check those guys out - im not familar with them!

But I do agree, it seems like we read about the same dudes, over and over!

Not trying to hi-jack the post, but you hardly hear anything about Billy F. Gibbons on here, and IMO, he is one of the most amazing guitar players around!

Jonsi from Sigur Ros. He brings a very interesting and unconventional way of playing guitar.

I've heard good things about them. They're Icelandic right?

All modern rock/pop guitarists aren't that good. Their just popular. Even hendrix wasnt a great player all the time. He used to walk offstage because he couldnt 'do it'. Imagine if nigel kennedy did the same.

I think this blokes good.

Ok sorry i phrased it wrong. I meant the modern big names. Theres a reccurring theme with em. They develop a certain technique and do it to death. It gets a bit mundane after a while. Which of the modern big names could hold there own technique for technique against the typical jazz or classical guitarist. My point remains, being popular doesnt equate with being good. If it did the spice girls would have been giving clapton lessons during the 90's.

That I agree with - fame seems to make one stagnant- if that's all you aspire to. However I have seen many a lesser known but extremely talented classical or jazz musician continually honing and perfecting their craft. Gotta love the world system...

+1 on that. I watched one of his concerts on tv and he was pretty good.

Yes. If you wanna check 'em out, I'd recommend the album Takk... or (). Happy Sigur Ros listening!
