After reading Fender's history, it appears they may have been a time when they possibly weren't producing guitars at the standard when the company was established. Like Harley being bought out by AMF and dripping oil for a few years until getting the company back on track again. Is there a certain year to look for when choosing a Fender? Obviously a vintage Strat or Tele will be worth picking up, but the years after Leo Fender sold the company in '65 until recent years might be sketchy? Any opinions or knowledge on this? Thanks.

The current owners are doing a pretty nice job. I'm not sure if they were part of the MIJ move, but that was a good one.

Some people claim that the CBS-era or 70s-era Fenders are not as good as other era's, but topics like this tend to be subjective, and may vary widely depending upon what your tastes and preferences are, so I would just to try out and to play as many Fenders from as many different era's possible and make your own conclusions...

As for the OP question on the heading, go play a bunch of different guitars and pick one you like based on what you like, and go from there.
As for the other question, the new ones sound awesome and are considerably cheaper than the old ones. You might also look into the re-issues. Be prepared because like tattoo's, buying guitars can be addictive.

You're right about the tattoos! Already doing that! As well as old cars and PC building. I have too many hobbies! I can't keep up with everything.

You don't!

The right Fender selects YOU!

There's no such thing as the 'right' Fender... but most would agree that pre-CBS are better quality than later guitars.

In my own experience, I've found this to be very true.

I've never walked into a music store looking for a specific Fender. I'm one of those people who have the love-at-first-sight type of G.A.S.

If you get a boner while playing it you've found the right one

If you really want a Fender the first thing you should do is play as many models as you can in your price range (HSS and SSS configurations). As long as you find one that plays and sounds good you found the right one.

Go out and play as many different ones as possible, new and used. You will know it when you pick up the right one. There will be an immediate bonding take place.

Personally I have a preference for mid 80's MIJ's.
