Too much tech takes away from the musical experiance if you ask me. K.I.S.S. keep it simple stupid. Some of the best music I have heard is decidedly low tech. Why on earth would any musician worth his salt need a guitar that tunes itself? 8)

To play in many different tunings without changing guitars or using digital modeled output?

That's one I can think of.

There was a time when people said, "Why on earth would anybody want a solid guitar? That stupid canoe paddle will never sell." I don't think Gibson has made all the best decisions, but I also don't think they're so delusional as to imagine that the Robot Guitar would sweep the music world: I"m sure they see it as a niche instrument for a small target.

Just ask Gibson.
In the past couple of years they have introduced very technologically advanced guitars such as the Robot series and lately the Dark Fire.

While these guitars may be more advanced with high technology electronics and auto tuning capabilities I don't think they are very popular.

I think Leo Fender got it right the first time which is why we still have the same basic guitar that has lasted 50plus years.

Ya and pedal boards full of effects to go with it or muti effects in the rack

Im so glad im a guitar-cable-amp player. Effects are ok every now and again but dont they become a crutch. I dont even use drive anymore let alone reverb.

Thats another thing about the subjectivity of what makes a good guitar.
though Ive used the term 'dogs' myself I cant think of a fender Ive ever taken off the wall that I would call unplayable.
How the instrument is set up (or Not set up) makes a tremendous difference.
A far bigger difference then swimming pool routing or grain.
Or such vintage arcana.
I find naturally resonant instruments more personaly appealing but there is no evidence that the wood actually exerts much effect on the interplay between the strings and the pick up.
I know there are those who will swear to it but...
At Sidells Music in Lewiston Idaho fender dealer Kelly Sidell sets up all the instruments himself and you can take a Squire off the wall and I promise it will play like butter with perfect intonation.
Ive been to other places where the guitars obviously go straight from the box to the wall and you can grab a pricey U.S. and go
'eh....'
Its not to say the more expensive instrument isnt high quality but how it is set up plays a huge difference.
of course my 'plays like butter ' might be your 'sloppy'.
