Hello. I took home my first Strat yesterday (a sexy candy apple red--the best color in my opinion) from GC. Still learning how to play, but would like to get the best sound possible. I'm a newbie so I'm not attuned to very subtle differences in tone. What kind of upgrades do you guys recommend (including which brand)? I'm attracted to Blues and early rock n roll music.

1. PUPS
2. TUNERS
3. SADDLE/BRIDGE ASSEMBLY
4. NUT

I'm definitely getting a white pearl pickguard though.

Thanks for your help.

Leave it alone for now. You'll know when it's time to mod.

Yah I would recommend to wait a little, its too early to mod ... now if you wanna go mod crazy right now then you can do a lot of stuff but give the guitar a chance to speak to you before doing that :)

Agreed, and also as you play more, and you get more familiar with different guitar sounds, and your ear develops(and it will,) you will get a better idea of what kind of guitar sound you want.

this is kind of a personal taste area. different for different people. i would never do any mods unless, and until, you have a pretty clear idea of what your target tones would be. following other people's advice blindly could lead you to spending a lot of money, and still being unhappy. and that's another point are you actually unhappy with your sound? it's easy to get caught up in the idea of modding ( i do it, but I have a destination in mind.) but modding just to mod, isn't a good plan.

some people really like texas Special pickups, I do too, but I prefer CS Fat 50's. But it would be foolish to buy either without knowing whether you sound better with which, or even if you like em better than the stock ones, (a lot of people--the vast majority actually, are so happy with stock pickups they never change em.)

Exactly. The more you play, and the more your skills develop, you're going to find that you're preferences have possibly changed as far as sound goes. What you like today, you'll laugh at in a year-type changes. Possibly, that is. :)

Mine is the Candy Apple Red, not Cherry Red.

Thanks for the insight. I was planning on waiting a while anyway, just thought I should know what I'd be shooting for. Definitely agree with waiting until I'm really comfortable with playing the guitar.

By the way, how long did it take you guy to learn how to play? I practice daily. Currently I'm trying to memorize the minor pentatonic scales in all positions. Is that a good place to start?

Excellent start. Especially if you're building some solo chops. Just don't forget your chords.

How long does it take to learn to play? Not long at all. How long to play the way you want? Dont know, will let you know when I get there, my guess is a lifetime.

That's a good start. You might also want to learn your chords and learn to read chord sheets, it will come in handy if you ever want to jam with people. When I had just started and after I had the pentatonic scale down, I used the free drum loops on garage band (I have a Mac) and just soloed like crazy over it. It's fun and it helps build things like good phrasing and licks. As far as learning goes, you never, ever, ever stop. I've been at it for three years and I still feel like a beginner when I see people who are better than me play. So I'm not going to relax and say I've learned enough, I'm going to keep going.

+1 to everyone else -- You got a great guitar . Likely you just started trying to find your sound. Wait a while. If the time comes to mod, you will be the first to know. Until then ... practice, practice, practice.

mim's are good value for money and you can play different styles with that guitar.

You don't need any changes.

Enjoy this guitar and good luck on your way.

cheers :D
