Brian -- you assume that my statement means, "Guys with lots of guitars can't play."

But it means no more than what it says: "Okay, I see you own many guitars. But i don't care if you own many guitars. Anyone can buy guitars. I would only be impressed if you were a good guitar player."

That's pretty much what Becker is getting at, too.

No, statements frequently imply well more than they expressly state. Yours most certainly did.

Here, you imply that the person posting/owning the guitars did so to "impress" you, and are concerned whether you "care" that they own what they do. Maybe they just like guitars and figure you might as well?

There are certainly people who do buy or post guitars to impress other people. But you seem to assume that when people own too many or too nice, that is their motive, at least until proven otherwise by impressing you with their playing ability.

It's almost a kind of reverse snobbery. If a person has nice guitars or too many, they'd better be able to impress you with their playing ability.

Me, I own what I own, and play how I play. Nobody else has to impress me with their playing in order for me to enjoy looking at their guitars. It's fun to do whether they can play or not, or have expensive guitars or not, or have a lot of guitars or not.

I suppose there is some sort of "Genetic Memory" in us that makes us believe (unless you're a Buhdist monk), that the more an item COSTS, the better it is. We would be better served if we knew the value of something over its cost.

It's human nature; "you get what you pay for" has been ingrained in most of us from an early age, even in families where parents are not particularly materialistic. Starting out, I could not afford anything particularly "nice," as is true of many. By the time I could afford some pretty nice gear, experience had proven that there is a "law of diminishing returns" vis-a-vis gear prices. Once you get past a certain minimum level, the increase in quality versus increase in price becomes more and more incremental.

Basically, I just look for a good deal, at whatever price point. That could be getting a $100 Brownsville or a Les Paul Classic for $750.

Some folks are overly concerned with "brand". I think that they suffer from self esteem issues and make themselves feel better by tearing other people down.

That being said, all my Fenders are US made, so I'm not a MIA hater. I don't knock anyones choices in gear because we're all doing the best we can with the resources at our disposal.

"Way back when", I started out on a junker guitar that I purchased at a swap meet. It had all sorts of switches and knobs (most of which did not work) and flattend frets in a couple of places, but it was the best I could do at the time. I'd rather see somone play than not play.

When I talk to kids just getting into guitar, I try to motivate them by finding something to praise about whatever guitar they have (even if it's only 'wow man, cool color'). Discouraging fellow musicians is just down right despicable.

On the plus side, I recently rebuilt 2 Starcaster Strats for eager young guitarists and they are happy as anything to have "real electric guitars" to play.
