Your music counterpart is, of course, tactless and crass. There are those of us, out here, who are old enough to remember when there was only one Stratocaster and you had to have money in your pocket to afford one in those years.

Whether or not the same guitar visually should be made available at different price points is a debate for another thread. In the case at hand the milk of human kindness is all that is required.

Perhaps your counterpart is truly not cut out for a gig and venue where the golden rule is in force and I would seriously consider my continued association with that kind of individual.

Doc

I guess the Mex /U.S. thread in the Tele Forum got me thinking about this.
I own and love both .
Its an instrument to instrument thing in my opinion.
Tired debate.
But I wonder why some people feel the need to one up other players?
One of my musical outlets is of all things a church worship team.
The other guitarist is a gear fanatic, boutique amps Gibson and Fender Custom Shop axes good player.
But time and time again ive seen people mostly kids come up eager and bright eyed just wanting to show him their new entry level guitars that theyve been inspired to pick up and play( by him!) and watch them sent away crest fallen and discouraged after he cant help but catalogue all the ways their instruments are 'inferior, sub standard foriegn pieces of crap' compared to his U.S. made 'real' guitars.
Of course ive read other boards where 'Master Built' owners sniff at lowly 'Team Built' Custom Shop Fenders because of 'Quality and Tone issues'
How's that for taking it absurd?
Personaly id like to put them in a room with their boutique axes for a head cutting contest with Jeff Beck.....who would be armed with an Affinity Strat.

I agree Kline, although I admit to being a MIA guy (because I can afford it) not because I deserve it. I too find my musical outlet in a Church praise band and I know that there are others in my Church who may be better musicians but choose not to make the commitment. I guess God does use the foolish things of the world to confound the wise in the world...

I encourage all the younger guys (and girls) who approach me to get involved in the youth music program and I don't knock their gear just because it isn't as expensive as mine. I work occasionally at a local music store and I've had the opportunity to play the new MIM Strats and Teles and they are good guitars... Heck I played a Squier Classic Vibe last week that has as good a neck on it as one of my MIAs.

By the way I'd sit in on the Jeff Beck challenge just so I could say I'd jammed with him...

Who here began as a guitar player with custom-shop-grade guitars and hand-wired valve amps?? Answer: no one. So it is sounds like someone has forgotten or abandoned one's guitar roots. That is too bad. For me, I treasure the memories I have playing for countless hours as a 12-year-old, sitting at the edge of my bed with my low-rent Fender Duo-sonic and playing (also with a 1960s Gibson amp that barely did anything at all).

Anyone who knocks cheap guitars has never heard/played an old(or new even,) Danelectro. So many players cut their teeth on old Silvertones (made by a variety of manufacturers over the years, including Danelectro, Kay--maybe harmony??,among others.)

I wish I still had my old Dano, looked funky, played like a dream. Was cheaply made. Sounded great.

I agree the most vehement gear snobs seem to be those who need to focus on something other than playing. There is no excuse in the world for sucking the joy out of a kid's(or anyone's,) purchase of an instrument.

This topic is reminding me of a story in a Bill Bryson book, a conversation about hiking backpacks rather than about guitars. I guess people get as funny about backpack brands as people do about Gibson vs Fender.

He talks about stopping at a rest stop while on a hike and a guy comes up and says, "Soooo.....why did you go with the Gregory pack?"

And Bill replies, "I thought it would be easier than just carrying everything in my arms."

Wish there was a similar reply all the Squier kiddies could give your bandmate.

Want to make your point and put that guy on the spot?

Next time he shoots his mouth off, ask him "what would Jesus say"?

ellen, the only thing Squire kiddies, and adults, need is to point at the headstock here:

Jeff Healey<--click me!!

This guy only had his ears to pick out guitars, and there isn't a person in world who can say he didn't sound great, or that he didn't have mad skills.

good enough for him, means good enough for anyone below(or even at,)superstar status.[/code]

The name or the price of the instrument should not matter. Remember how before Nirvana you could find great deals on Jaguars, Mustangs, Jazzmasters, etc. because these were often seen as the cheap, low-end non-popular Fenders...The Nirvana blew up, and so did the prices on the "the cheap, low-end non-popular Fenders"...these were still the same old guitars you could buy used and find in every pawn shop across the country that no one wanted until Nirvana blew up...So who cares what someone else thinks. Just have fun, and don't give a crap about anyone else...isn't that what music is about at times anyways?

My local CL has one of those Silvertone Sears cardboard guitar with amp in case for $400. I liked the lipstick PUs on those but boy did it feel cheap :)
