I guess the Mex /U.S. thread in the Tele Forum got me thinking about this.
I own and love both .
Its an instrument to instrument thing in my opinion.
Tired debate.
But I wonder why some people feel the need to one up other players?
One of my musical outlets is of all things a church worship team.
The other guitarist is a gear fanatic, boutique amps Gibson and Fender Custom Shop axes good player.
But time and time again ive seen people mostly kids come up eager and bright eyed just wanting to show him their new entry level guitars that theyve been inspired to pick up and play( by him!) and watch them sent away crest fallen and discouraged after he cant help but catalogue all the ways their instruments are 'inferior, sub standard foriegn pieces of crap' compared to his U.S. made 'real' guitars.
Of course ive read other boards where 'Master Built' owners sniff at lowly 'Team Built' Custom Shop Fenders because of 'Quality and Tone issues'
How's that for taking it absurd?
Personaly id like to put them in a room with their boutique axes for a head cutting contest with Jeff Beck.....who would be armed with an Affinity Strat.

I guess it just depends on whether you want to be known as a guitar owner or a guitar player.

(thanx and a tip o' the skimmer to Walter Becker.)

Seriously, every time someone on line starts postings lists or exhaustive pictures of their gear, I always have the same reaction: "Nice checkbook. Let's hear you play."

That's a shame and why you will never hear me say anything but "congratulations" to anyone with a new guitar. :?

Well put Hop, I echo your sentiments. Why bring this topic/argument to the lounge??? It's only gonna open the same can of worms :( I for one (as well as most here|) worked very hard to generate the cash for my guitars, and gear. And just for the record, I don't have a checkbook

I own 2 Squiers that I like very much. They were the first electrics that I every bought. The top of my GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) list is a Squier Classic Vibe '50s Telecaster.

I own one Fender guitar that I happened to win. I like it a lot too. It is way over my budget for a guitar.

And I own an old beatup 36-year old acoustic.

They all have their place and time.

And I just acquired a brand new Fender Super Champ XD - it too is not the top of the line - but it fills a need that I have.

I'm proud of what I own, but that's because the guitars say/said something to me - I don't care what they say to others.

That's why I say F'em. I love cheap guitars and gear, to a reasonable extent. People like that don't know what they're missing.

I have with with those who are like MINE IS BETTER THEN YOURS IS NANNY NANNY BOO BOO many times they are kids or they are just childish adults. I love the gear I have and I love the gear that many others have and I wish I did or even could. But then again I am never going to say any gear I own is the best there is because honestly its not. I like it or I would not have bought it. Then there's the ones you thought you like until latter down the road which happens. As long as things are good nature

Most people I run into who are gear snobs can't really play well, so they knock someone's gear since they cannot say anything about their playing. Other people are just snobs in general, and some people are paranoid that the new kid learning to play guitar may get more attention than him or eventually outplay him if the kid gets good quick or is a natural, so they just knock a kids gear as a means of intimidating them...its sad bit true...

I have a mim and a mia, bought the mim first, and other than the p'ups can honestly say there is not that big of a difference between the two. The quality and fit/finish of the mim is just as good as the mia and I play both everyday. 8)

I've found some master built things to work worse than the mass produced stuff, at least with Kayaks :)
They cost a fortune, look amazing on the rack, but can track like a wet noodle. in the water.
They make for great conversation round a fire of a dream paddling trips, but I'll stick to my mass produced rotomolds or glass boats on the real water. :)

Not sure that it carries over to guitars never tried master built gear :)
For me it usual was a trip to the candy store and spotting something that caught my eye on the wall I just had to try and ended up buying before I knew the price :)
Ended up with some no-name gear as well as some really good quality stuff that way.

It's not the gear that makes the music.
