March 2nd, 2008, Canadian guitarist, singer, Jeff Healey, died of cancer. Healey lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eyes when he was eight months old, resulting in his eyes being surgically removed. After living cancer-free for 38 years, he developed sarcoma in his legs. Despite surgery for this, the sarcoma spread to his lungs and ultimately was the cause of his death. Healey released over 12 albums, presented a long running radio show and worked with many artists including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, BB King, ZZ Top, Steve Lukather, Eric Clapton and Ian Gillan.

It was a great loss. Not just a great musician, but a fine gentleman. Rest in peace, Jeff.

I went to a Jeff Healy gig a number of years ago, I hadn't heard any of his stuff. I won the tickets on some radio show, what a night! The next day I went out and got a few of his albums, been a huge fan ever since. Like many other great musicians, he left us too soon. His music lives on, and will continue to do so for years to come.

Jeff Healey was a truly great guitar player. Unique sound, unique style.
He was super nice to his fans. Met him a couple times, when he played at bars I worked at. not like we hung out, but he was a really nice guy.

he was known for his 'red pickup' Squires. Just goes to show its the player, not the fancy gear.

I can't even imagine playing a guitar the way he did and being blind. It's even crazier that he played upside down. And he played better than most players do WITH their sight AND playing the normal "easy" way.

He was truly an amazing person in so many ways. Now THIS guy is a legend.

a lot of his sound/style arose from his unconventional way of holding the guitar.

Yep, I can imagine some of the tone and lot of his phrasing would change because of this. I used to love to watch him play. Very inspiring. Of course, I tried to play that same way. Yeah, that lasted for like a minute before I just flipped it over and played it normal :)
