I can shred, but I don't really find it that useful in the music I play. I'd much rather play something beautiful than something fast.

Hate to say exactly what the rest said...
But:
it shouldn't be about speed but about the joy or at least the emotion!
I once enjoyed playing no woman no cry by B. Marley with some other dudes, I almost cried!

Who wants to play fast? It sounds horrible thats why i do not listen to Metal.

I guess because i am more influenced by Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and George Harrison.

I think Shredding has a place in music, but it gets old if that's all the performer is going to do. What I'd like to see is a Guitarist go from a real Blues or Jazz with lots of expression, then Shred a Song, then do a song with no solo in it at all.

Someone once said to me that Jazz was lots of wrong notes at the right time.

I can play Metallica and Megadeth songs without any problems. Speed is not my game anymore. I am into more into being technically proficient than speed oriented.

You know why you never hear an unplugged/all acoustic death metal or speed metal album? Because it would probably sound a bit like Bluegrass with Cookie Monster vocals

I don't know how fast I can REALLY shred. I don't want to know how fast I can shred. I don't listen to that type of "music." The speaker membrane on an amp is only going to flex so fast. When it is returning and another note is played before it returns, you loose seperation of musical notes. At some blurring point, the music becomes mush. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I heard The Edge say that he thinks there is something to playing with economy. A few meaningful notes go a long way. Listen to what players like BB King, Muddy Waters, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Eric Clapton do (did) with a few extremely well chosen and perfectly timed notes. They seldom blow out completely, but flash the speed (tastefully) at you in a well chosen way. Listen to "Tin Pan Alley" by SRV. That's how it's done in blues guitar.

Satch is about as fast a guitarist I enjoy listening to. He is extremely fast, but doesn't play at blurring speeds the whole time. Joe has soul in his playing. These were a few examples, not all that could be named for sure. Just my opinion.
