Can't,
shread and what I consider good music for me don't fit on the same page :)

Guitar Players recent decent into mainly shread full issues is what caused me to drop my prescription to them this month.

They can't be serious about that thing, can they?

This is as Fast as I can Play. I call It Wanking, not Shredding.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d30wQc9wiUg

To Me, Shredding is fluid 32nd and 64th notes, not just playing as fast as you can. I could be wrong. The first time I heard someone say, "That Dude Shreds" I thought he meant he was a Snowboarder.

I don't really shred, I peel or grate cheese. It doesn't matter how fast you can play if you have no sense of rhythm, timing, melody, and harmony. I see and know people who can play hundreds of notes per minute probably, but it doesn't sound like anything memorable and it just doesn't flow, it seems forced. Its not how many notes you play, its playing the right notes at the right time...

To me, being called a "shred" guitarist is an nearing an insult. Would you call Steve Morse or Al DiMeola shredders? Probably not -- but they can play at insane speeds. That is because "shred", to me, is merely an exercise. It is mostly just blindly fast double-picking and scales. The key is how well you can play slowwww and your ability to introduce that speed in your playing tastefully? Guitarists like Steve Morse are amazing because they can play artfully slow and then mix it up with some forbidden speed-demon llightning. This is called "dynamics" and it is not easy to do well. Shredding on the other hand is easy. For me, I have had serious speed by the time I was 18, and I have spent the next 25 years slowing down.

"Shredding" gets real boring real fast. Ever hear Drangon Force? Makes me want to quit playing.
