What worried me a bit was the people in this thread mentioning using plain surge protectors, which won't trip on an unexpected (you) path to ground.

GFI protects you, surge protector protects your equipment.
If you are traveling on the road use both!

I did not have a mic problem so long as I stayed far away from them, I suspect if I got too close to a mic flying beer bottles would be a worse hazard.
