I remember that many years ago......amps had ground switches. Guitar players had to change the ground plugs, so that everyone was grounded in the same way. I remember touching other guitar players and getting one hell of a shock if this wasn't done.

My amps now don't have any. I assume that it's because now modern wall plugs and device plugs have a ground hole/pin to ground all equipment. I never seem to get that old shock when touching another guitar player now. And........I always keep my hands out of an amp.

Cable with a GFI socket on it in front of the surge protector.

Can probably find them or something similar at Lowes.

But now I used another method, got a to old to gig anymore :)

I'm not gigging, but I do use a surge protector, and at home I know the outlets are properly grounded. If you're out there playing different venues & rehearsal studios, get a ground checker and check all outlets your gear is plugged into--including the PA.

Wireless cuts down on the risk as well--but isn't always feasible--I don't have one. But I wouldn't mind one.

And if someone ever comes out with a reliable fibre optics cable--I'd get one.

I've heard of waterproofing guitars. I think I want to look into that, I sweat a bit when I play infront of people.

I use Panamax protectors. I have several of these around the house as well on equipment. Get the ones that have noise protection as well they do work. There are several to choice from as you can see. All our cable TV's are hooked up with these even because as you see can run cable tv through and DSL for surge protection with lightning strikes.. They are top line surge protectors.

I plug my amp into a surge protector, but I really never thought about protection, it just seemed like a good idea when I started playing.

A surge protector protects your equipment & you from voltage spikes.

Does nothing for you if the house circuits are bad or the venue is damp or worse.

If all goes as planned, the GFCI will trip when the theres a short circuit. That's why they're used on Construction Site, so the New Clown on the Skil Saw can go ahead and step in a puddle of water. He'll gat a shock and the GFCI will trip, but he won't get Electrocuted.

Still, be aware of bad electrical situations when giging.

In my extremely modest gigging career I always had a superstition that it was vital to get everything switched on and then to insist the sound man made full lip contact with each live mic in turn.

More recently read Matt Schofield talking about being blown across a stage when he momentarily lipped a wrongly earthed mic. So maybe I wasn't so far off the mark, back in the day...

Cheers - C

That's right Ceri, I think mic's have always been the worst culprits in electrical 'accidents' our singer was always getting mild tingles. Especially off' in house 'club mic's that we sometimes had to use.
A bass player that once played in our band was killed by a mic.
I always remember back in '65 ish the vocalist in a band called Black Cat Bones was killed when he grabbed two mic's, one in each hand, that were not earthed , the current must have passed right across his heart.
There as been many cases that were microphone involved.

Exactly, that is why I brought my own cord with GFI on it when I used to leave my cave, can't trust every site to have ground fault on their circuits.
:)

What worried me a bit was the people in this thread mentioning using plain surge protectors, which won't trip on an unexpected (you) path to ground.

GFI protects you, surge protector protects your equipment.
If you are traveling on the road use both!

I did not have a mic problem so long as I stayed far away from them, I suspect if I got too close to a mic flying beer bottles would be a worse hazard.
