Someone explained this to me once.

Made In Japan means all parts were made and assembled in Japan

Crafted in Japan means some of the parts are made else where and it is assembled in Japan.

No, I don't think that is correct. Basically, guitars made by Fender Japan originally had "Made in Japan" on the base of the neck, along with a serial number. Around 1997-1998, they were running out of serial number prefixes (they were at "V"), so they started naming the guitars "Crafted in Japan" and started again with an "A" prefix on the serial numbers.

My understanding is that the manufaure and componentry of the guitars remained the same, just the name changed.

MIJ and CIJ guitars are generally very high quality and sometimes they even have USA manufactured components, especially recently with regard to pickups.

My Stratocaster XII 12 string is crafted in Japan and it's a great sounding guitar. I think a lot of players like the Japanese fenders for good reasons. They are made well, use top end parts and play like butter.

That's news to me....

I have been repeated informed by people who claim they know that the crafted in Japan series were just the continuation of the MIJ series with a different name, there is no difference whatsoever. I have many of both and this appears to be the case.

Anyone else have an opinion?

From Wikipedia:

"According to a Fender representative it was in the Fender Japan contract that if there was a change of manufacturer from FujiGen Gakki to another guitar factory then the logo would be changed from MIJ ("Made in Japan") to CIJ ("Crafted in Japan"). The first CIJ Fenders start around 1993 and only last for a short while before the Japanese Fenders return to MIJ. Around 1992/1993 FujiGen Gakki were expanding their factory to be able to handle additional contracts (such as the Orville by Gibson contract) and so Dyna Gakki (Kanda Shokai's main guitar maker) took over some of the making of the Japanese Fender models for a short while which resulted in a CIJ logo being used on some Japanese Fenders instead of a MIJ logo. CIJ is mostly used on Fenders from 1996/1997 until recently due to Tokai and Dyna Gakki taking over the Fender Japan manufacturing contract from FujiGen Gakki in 1996/1997. The Fender Squiers were also brought into line with the Japanese Fenders at around the same time (1996/1997) with 'Crafted' rather than 'Made' being used. "Made in Japan" is used on some current Fender Japan models (2007) instead of "Crafted in Japan".

So there really is no difference between MIJ and CIJ. It was more of an administrative distinction. The guitars made by Fender Japan didn't change at all.

No problem man. I like Wiki a lot. When Google fails me, Wiki almost always comes thru. Another great reference is About.com. Sometimes they have obscure info too.
