The only thing I see in pop music is jailbait girls dressed to look like porn stars dancing around to bad music...Unless its the Jonas Brothers, as all I see from them is the new Hanson of the 21st century...

The term pop music is a derivative of the 50's term popular culture music. It was the term for everything back then from dewop to rockabilly and all points in between including modern jazz. So in effect every band you listen to today from slayer to beyonce is pop music as it comes from popular culture. What is termed pop music these days is nothing more than a money machine thats rapidly coming to a end thanks to piracy.

Hello WillyWonkaP,

Sure, I like pop music.
I'm pretty open minded.

Cheers.

I dislike labels...it's either a song that you like or a song that you don't like [to me anyway]. :!:

There are only 2 types of music...good and bad. Just because you like it doesn't mean its good. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean its bad.
There can be good music (well written, hooks etc) but you may not like it, and then there is just plain old poorly written music.
Its all subjective....too subjective.

As mentioned previously, there's good, mediocre, and bad in Pop and Rock music both. This is true for many other genres as well.

Good music makes you stop and take notice.

Mediocre music is chewing gum for the ears.

Bad music makes you tune out.

yea the term 'pop' is certainly a hazy gray area with no definition. alot of the music you guys likely listen to is pop. somebody mentioned beatles, hendrix, etc. yea, in that time, that stuff was pop, and im sure everyone here digs those artists.

the problem that i think the originator was going for was today's pop scene, and how it is being exploited by the industry with a bunch of fake, processed garbage, i.e. jonas bros., miley cyrus, etc. Pop as a genre is not bad, its the artists that are starting to seep in that are bad. If we could get rid of Disney, i think it would improve music a lot

the thing that pisses me off is how nepotism is blatantly at large in music. Billy Ray begat Miley, Jessica Simpson begat Ashlee, Nick Carter (B.S. Boys) begat Aaron Carter, and im sure it wont stop there. it may as well be a family business. its all about the money which results from the large demand created by the predecessor. but the other reason why i get pissed off is because this phenomenon does not guarantee that the offspring will have the same (if any) talent as their ancestor. example: ashlee simpson openly admits to having acid reflux disease, which poses a problem for a singer. yet, she sold a crapload of albums. she basically relied on computing techniques such as pitch alteration and digital enhancement. probably EQ'd the heck out of her vocals too. but if you have to rely on crutches like that, then, you are not worthy of being considered an artist, and of landing a contract deal that could have been given to one of the thousands of real, straight up, talented, and struggling musicians in the U.S. alone.

i sure hope Ashlee accredited the studio computer in her Special Thanks list, or at least spent some of her money to buy it new anti-virus software.

EDIT: i realized that i should at least give credit where its due. nepotism has infact brought us some good. i.e. Dweezil Zappa, Jakob Dylan, Hank Williams II, Los Lonely Boys (that one might not count because their father, though a musician, wasn't popular). i'm sure there are others...

THANK YOU!!! that is what i have REALLY been wanting somene to say!!!

Early rock and roll began as "pop," especially on the AM Top 40 stations before there were so many sub-genres of "contemporary music."

That said, 'am NOT a fan of hyper-over-produced dominated-by-vocals-and-dancing "garbage-pop."

What I don't understand why pop is so popular. Its all fake and requires no skill to create beeps and chings along with singing into a computer program to fix your voice. Guitar has spirit and requires skill, AND sounds better. Please tell me your opinion on pop.

It does take some skill, production wise etc - the people that actually compose it. A personal pop production favourite of mine is "Wow" - Kylie Minogue. That's so well made.

Yeah, 'cause NO guitarist ever relies on pitch alteration and digital enhancement.

There are two types of music (to channel another poster): the music you like, and the music you don't. Simple enough.
