What I don't understand why pop is so popular. Its all fake and requires no skill to create beeps and chings along with singing into a computer program to fix your voice. Guitar has spirit and requires skill, AND sounds better. Please tell me your opinion on pop.

Good melodies, catchy riffs and if your lucky a middle 8. Not every guitarist wants to hear the new stairway to heaven or some rehashed doe before stuff. Both have their place.

Pop music is popular, has a beat, and is the only thing that people who aren't really interested in music listen too. Pop artists also make a lot of videos, put 'em on MTV and in that way, promote their music even more and give people a visual to the music.

Some of it is good, some of it is... well, anyway.

Grammar aside, it's incredible that you could type that sentence and not realize what you said.

Furthermore, the idea that "pop" music is enjoyed by people who aren't interested in music, and "rock" is enjoyed by music lovers... well, I'm speechless.

Pop is a vague term. Anything can be pop. Anything written to be catchy is pop. That includes the beatles, layla, some zeppelin, the ramones, hendrix, and metallica. It's not just miley cirus and jonas brothers. I like music more when the actual artist wrote it, with an instrument, and can reproduce it live without loops. I'm very for talented people who have the discipline and skill to construct their own product. You have to be weary of "artists" who have puppeteers behind them writing their songs and choreographing their lives. Those I assume are the pop artists you speak of and YES!! They blow.

like most things musical tastes tend to evolve with experience. i for one don't care for the manufactured pop-star of the week or the drama they always seem to be involved in. 8)

Not sure, but think he is trying to make a point that people who aren't really interested in music tune to a pop station as "background noise". It is safe music - not much there to offend anyone but not really much there to want to pay attention to either. Not much there to distract you as you do whatever you doing. People who enjoy rock tend to take their music a bit more seriously.

Like said before, Pop can be anything. Pop is just short for "Popular", which means "of the people" in latin. Derived from "Populus", which means People, or the people.
Soooooooooo, pop is just music that is generally liked. Nothing wrong with that.
Rock, too, can be more than one kind of music. You have soft-rock, hardrock, indie-rock, punk-rock, poprock, et cetera.

I guess, that by "pop", you mean hip-hop and top-40 music? Isn't it good for the people who never got the chance to pick up an instrument, or just never thought about it, or didn't want to, or couldn't, to also be able to enjoy music?
Be open to every kind of music man! Hate only produces more hate.

I guess I like most music, I think I like "pop" the best when I was much younger, late 60s, early 70s. POP as a genre could have a lot of different types of music included. Just a thought...

yea the term 'pop' is certainly a hazy gray area with no definition. alot of the music you guys likely listen to is pop. somebody mentioned beatles, hendrix, etc. yea, in that time, that stuff was pop, and im sure everyone here digs those artists.

the problem that i think the originator was going for was today's pop scene, and how it is being exploited by the industry with a bunch of fake, processed garbage, i.e. jonas bros., miley cyrus, etc. Pop as a genre is not bad, its the artists that are starting to seep in that are bad. If we could get rid of Disney, i think it would improve music a lot

the thing that pisses me off is how nepotism is blatantly at large in music. Billy Ray begat Miley, Jessica Simpson begat Ashlee, Nick Carter (B.S. Boys) begat Aaron Carter, and im sure it wont stop there. it may as well be a family business. its all about the money which results from the large demand created by the predecessor. but the other reason why i get pissed off is because this phenomenon does not guarantee that the offspring will have the same (if any) talent as their ancestor. example: ashlee simpson openly admits to having acid reflux disease, which poses a problem for a singer. yet, she sold a crapload of albums. she basically relied on computing techniques such as pitch alteration and digital enhancement. probably EQ'd the heck out of her vocals too. but if you have to rely on crutches like that, then, you are not worthy of being considered an artist, and of landing a contract deal that could have been given to one of the thousands of real, straight up, talented, and struggling musicians in the U.S. alone.

i sure hope Ashlee accredited the studio computer in her Special Thanks list, or at least spent some of her money to buy it new anti-virus software.

EDIT: i realized that i should at least give credit where its due. nepotism has infact brought us some good. i.e. Dweezil Zappa, Jakob Dylan, Hank Williams II, Los Lonely Boys (that one might not count because their father, though a musician, wasn't popular). i'm sure there are others...

I like Pop for it's melodies and interesting chord progressions.
It's not my fave genré, but I listen to it now and then to break out of I-IV-V.
