I have both Gibson's (LP and 336) and Fender's (2 Strats) and I like them all. I have in the past found guitars by both companies that I thought were really bad. I t depends on the guitar.

Chet is correct; it depends on the guitar; Gibby 336s and 356s are incredible sounding semi-hollows with a sustain that can cover the time span of the film "Gone With the Wind". The tone of Gibson 57 Classic humbuckers is a beautiful thing to listen to, whether in Les Pauls, hollows, or semi-hollows. Fender, on the other hand, has that clangy classic early rock n' roll sound that a humbucker can't do. The ideal...have some of each in your arsenal.

well, then again... you have to take into consideration the guitar that is right for you... you might really love gibson, but what you're playing is better on fender... and vice versa... i think what matters above all is what's right for the individual musician... different sounds, different guitars... it's almost like an apples and oranges type thing... both still guitars, completely different in a lot of aspects...

I like both. What would Dire Straits 'Sultans of Swing' sound like without a strat? But in the same vein, give a listen to Lynyrd Skynyrds 'Searchin' off the Gimme Back My Bullets album. Collins tone scrapes through the mix like a rusty razor blade..........but I love the tone!

.............then again, what would the Beatles have sounded like without George Harrisons Rickenbacker 12 string?

valid points, all and I believe each has its place and can't be interchanged.

It's another Vanilla or Chocolate debate. it's love hate, one over the other. I think Gibson, with it's archtop line offers more choices for a player, but I just like the way a Fender looks and feels in my hands. I don't like the design of the SG and for the me Les Paul is just a Les Paul. I agree that Fender has a better price point for most of their guiitars, as well as the Squier Series of axes. Though most gibson seem more expensive than fenders, let's not forget that gibson uses Epiphone to market their mid level and lower end stuff. A Vintage Les Paul is worth more and there is more demand than most Vintage Fenders.

I'm all for brand loyalty, but the bottom line is:

Whatever guitar you love the feel, look and sound of...well, thats a great guitar.

I own Gibsons, Guilds, Epi's and Fenders. Archtops and solidbodies. Each one has it's own spot in my tonal spectrum.

The dirty little secret going around serious players' circles is that Gibsons are way overpriced for the quality. Like the above said, you're paying for the name, not the build or sonic quality.

When Fender charges you a lot for an American Strat (still less than half of a Les Paul), you get what you pay for. It is an exceptional instrument. And exceptionally playable.

For me, and I've owned a lot of both brands, Fender's are in general more playable. Gibson's tend to be heavy and their necks a little awkward, the build quality per dollar spent not nearly up to Fender's.

Bottom line when I play for fun, I usually pick up a Fender, not a Gibson.

I can say that Gibsons are more expensive, why I am not sure. I am not so sure about the quality. I did own a low end Casino and it was a very nice instrument. It felt good in my hands and had a lot of balls. I think it is a very underatted guitar. It can used for rock, jazz, fusion, blues. I sold it cause I bought a Gretsch 6120
W 57 and like the sound better. If I were to buy a Gibson it would be an archtop, which they do a nice job with. I have been told that if you enjoy a Fender neck, your not going to like the gGbson or Epi's Les Paul or SG as they are different animals.

Played both. Loved both for versatility between the two. Once again... the guitar has got to feel and sound good to you... too pricey or not. If you love it and can afford it, you'll buy it.

I agree if you have the money, what the hell, buy what you feel is the best guitar for your individual needs. There will never be agreement on Fender vs. Gibson or Ibanez or Gretsch or Taylor or Martin. You will buy the guitar that feels good, sounds good, looks good and you can afford. Money is usually the number one criteria for many purchases. Can't afford an American deluxe...the MIM is almost as good...
