Good Morning people, I am having an issue with my Epiphone Valve Jr. amp -it's the head and cab version. I purchased it in 07 and only use it in my humble home studio. The last 6 months or so I've been playing mostly keyboards and running the guitar through my PC with a Pod Studio. A few months back I was noodling on the Epi amp a bit and apparently forgot to turn the amp off. Since it sits behind my mixer I didn't notice it was on for possibly a couple of weeks. When I did notice I shut it off, and didn't think any more about it. Well now when I turn it on after the tubes warm up, there is a crackling noise - static like- say if you were crumpling paper - not terribly loud but loud enough. It continues even when I don't have an instrument cable plugged in. It's driving me nuts- did I screw something up by leaving the amp on all that time? I changed the connecting cable from the head to the cab and it still gives me the noise- so it's got to be isolated inside the amp only. Any advice on where to start troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. Also I have never moved the amp from it's spot since I bought it.

Try cleaning the tube sockets or you might need a power/output tube replaced.

Thanks atoll, I was hoping it would be something simple like a tube. I've been thinking of changing both of them out anyway- they are the stock tubes - I'll check online. I hope that's it.

Should be that easy. Crackling is usually an indication of tubes going south. While you're at it clean the sockets.

You may want to have the amp re-biased too once you've replaced the tubes. Don't skimp on your tubes either. You'll be glad you spent the extra few bucks.

Always gives a chance to try the sound of new tubes, how exciting.

Now if only my tech guy could fix my amp. I've been stuck unplugged for a week now.
