MK, , when i wiki'd jimi hendrix last night their section on jimi's instuments might have it, if you have time to read the whole section on his strat dig what it says about the effect on his tone the upside down string order had, have fun bro.

Thanks, funne enough, I did that this morning and it didn't mention what year the lefty strat was first produced. See, I have a friend who says he has a 62 lefty in "mint condition and is curious what it is worth. I told him I don't believe it could be authentic since They were not produced that early. I could be wrong, but I cannot find any info on it.

Very interesting question. I have emailed Fender Customer Relations to see if I can get an answer. I'll post when I find out.

I think they made lefties as far back as 1955 ...

I'll have to dig up some proof of that, of course. A pic is worth a 1000 words.

Here's a 1971:

Fender price lists of March 1958 through April 1970 say that left-handed models are 10% more (according to Duchossoir's Strat Book). A 1958:

Then why was Clapton so surprised to see a lefty Strat in 1970 and bought it for Hendrix then? Maybe they didnt export so many lefties.

There probably weren't very many lefties made at all.

There is a '50s maple necked leftie pictured on page 100 of The Stratocaster Chronicles book. It's year isn't given.

I haven't found the source of my foggy memory that lefties were first made in 1955.

I couldn't find any info on the earliest left-handed Strats.

The only evidence I've found is that the LH option was on the March 1958 price list. Of course, various options (like custom colors) were often available before they were listed on price lists.

OK, Here is the response I received back from Fender:

We do not have records that have that info, but I have seen some as early as 1955.
