Ha! Well I'm the baby here: 45 in October...

Ten albums, in no particular order:

Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy - The Who. When all's said and done, they were a singles band before everything else.
Rubber Soul - The Beatles. Fave of the Fab Four. Nothing over blown, just perfect number after perfect number.
Live at Filmore East - The Allman Brothers. Best live album of all time. Duane's lead on Elizabeth Reed: my fave ever guitar solo.
Really - JJ Cale. Total cool!
Dire Straits - Dire Straits. If you were around at the particular period when this came along you though; "what a relief - a guitar-lead band that's not leather metal." And that was before spandex...
Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix. What more needs saying?
Stray Cats - Stray Cats. Yet another US act that broke in the UK first - and I just happened to be there at the time! Hot, fast and furious!

And just to keep up with russianracehorse:

Swingin' New Band - Buddy Rich. Ohmygod! A turning point in life.
Beethoven Violin Concerto - Joseph Szigeti, Bruno Walter et al. Childhood spent listening to my dad play this disc and then attempt to emulate it on his own violin - with fair success.
Petruchka - Stravinsky, cond. Simon Rattle, CBSO. Life long favorite piece of music. Grew up on the Bernstein recording but perhaps like this one even better.

Cheers - C

Hi ripitup555: I'm sure there's others better placed than me to recommend sharp rockabilly players - I'd be glad to hear. It was never much my thing as such - but the Cats made an incredible impression on me from about six feet away in a tiny club one sweaty night back in 1981. Brian's hot now - but he was a lot hotter then when he was lean and hungry!

For anyone interested, there's currently a little Brian Setzer guitar lesson on his website homepage that's nice (though on a horrible finished guitar):

http://www.briansetzer.com/

The mysteries of his hybrid picking technique are introduced there, and for anyone who wants more he did a pretty interesting Hot Licks DVD that has some grown up stuff on it.

Cheers - C

Starvin's even better for the music!!!

To take it back to the point of russianracehorse's thread, I think the reason that first Cats record was so important in my life was that it showed me we can get a lot out of music that is way out of our own area of interest.

Kinda opened the way to a whole lot of other listening and enjoyment. Doubt I'd have paid much attention to Chet Atkins, for example, if Brian Setzer hadn't shown me new avenues first.

Maybe something along those lines was coming off me at that gig. There must be some reason I survived unscathed: there was a moment when I looked about me and realised I was completely surrounded by rockers with huge hair and even bigger fists and I though, "uh-oh: this is where I get stomped". Guess I musta looked so into it they decided to leave me alone - despite my offensive Fred Perry polo shirt!!

Hi Beaubs: it has been revealed here before that I was (and still am) a drummer before I was a guitarist. Grew up on the likes of Keith Moon - but life changed the day my dad brought home Buddy Rich's first two Pacific Jazz albums. Ohmygod!!! Didn't know that sort of thing was possible...

I saw Buddy I think eight times in different sized venues. And as I've also mentioned before I had the honor to appear (as an audience member) on a Buddy Rich album, Man From The Planet Jazz, recorded at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in 1980, if memory serves. My most illustrious public performance!

I imagine you and I heard pretty much the same material that year. Fab, wasn't it?

Agree with your first 10 straycat but I have to say that the first 5 Beatles and the first 5 Stones did it for me in my teens. It seemed like The Beatles would put one out and the immediately The Stones would answer with the "Bad Boy" version. What a battle!! :) 8)

Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
I first listened to it when I was too young to fully understand the lyrics (thought the Midnight Rambler was a train :P ).
I still listen to it to this day with just as much interest as back when I was a wee one. To me, a perfect album.

And then there's...
Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Rolling Stones - Exile On Mainstreet
Beatles - Beatles (White Album)
Beatles - Revolver
Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love
B. B. King - Live In Cook County Jail
Muddy Waters/Howlin' Wolf - Muddy & The Wolf
Muddy Waters - Hard Again
Muddy Waters - I'm Ready
...and many, many more!

More than just his albums, all of Muddy Waters' recordings have inspired me to this day.
Once I hooked into his stuff, that was all I listened to for the longest time.
