Hey FenderHeads-

This is a great thread. You learn a lot about your fellow forumheads from reading their list.- So here is my list. I must first thank my older brothers for going off to college and leaving me their albums to ruffle through- Thus began my musical education-

1. "The Doors"- The Doors, Such a great album
2. "Are You Experienced"- Jimi Hendrix Experience, You mean a guitar can do that???
3. "The Allman Brothers Band" - The Allman Brothers Band, Greatest American Band
4. "Santana"- Santana, Mana from the gods
5. "Live Wire Blues Power"- Albert King, In your face Blues.
6. "Endless Summer"- Beach Boys, Started noticing Girls.
7. "Hotel California"- More Girls
8. "Fresh Cream and Wheels On Fire"- Cream-
9. "Dark Side of the Moon"- Pink Floyd, This isn't music...It's an experience
10 "Texas Flood"- SRV, Right then and There I knew I needed to learn to play guitar.

The list could go on...but these are the top 10 I could think of...

The Freeze

Fascinating reading guys, some of my favorite albums have already been listed. But one that really changed my outlook on life, Solidair, by John Martyn. An absolute must for any collector of great music, just my humble opinon though. And bol316, if you like World Party, check out Goodbye Jumbo.
Got every album and boots. Long live Karl Wallinger!

Early influences in semi-chronological and I cheated (13):

The Monkees – Their debut – Great studio guitarists and the Brill Bldg-era’s best songwriters. Got this the same year as my 1st guitar.
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles – Learned that Rock could be art
“The White Album”and Abbey Road – The Beatles, nuff said
Electric Ladyland – Jimi Hendrix – How did he get all of those strange and wonderful sounds?
Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II – When their music was still Blues-based
Disraeli Gears – Cream – Wah! Sunshine of Your Love, one of my all-time favs
Happy Trails – Quicksilver Messenger Service – John Cipollina RIP
Abraxas – Santana – Great guitar work against Latin rhythms
Who’s Next – The Who – “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, powerful guitar with synth
Paranoid – Black Sabbath – Dark, heavy Rock . . .and used my Univox Super-Fuzz for Iron Man vocals
Can’t Buy a Thrill – Steely Dan – Realin’ In the Years

Later on Grand Funk RR (it was pretty easy to play), Bridge of Sighs, the rest of the Steely Dan albums, The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Texas Flood, VH’s 1984, and so many, many more.

I have tried extrememly hard to narrow the list down to 10 albums and I cannot, this is the best I can do. And "changing your life" may be a little hyperbole...

1. Bob Dylan, Blonde on Blonde. This is the album that made me a Bob Dylan fan. Just Like a Woman, Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again, Visions of Johanna...
2. Little Feat, Waiting for Columbus. One of the finest live albums of all time with Little Feat at the top of their game.
3. Deep Purple, Machine Head. "Lazy" was one of the songs that turned me on to the blues.
4. Doobie Brothers, The Captain and Me. South City Midnight Lady was the favorite song of an old girlfriend. Lots of memories there...
5. Allman Brothers, Live at the Fillmore. Duane and Dickie on fire, enough said.
6. Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cosmo's Factory. Three top five singles, and that long version of 'I Heard it Through the Grapevine". Awesome.
7. Derek and the Dominoes, Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs. Eric and Duane meshing like long lost brothers. Holy Smoke!
8. Jimmy Buffett, A1A. The album that started my Parrothead journey. "Nautical wheelers" is one of his greatest songs...And then Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season, Migration, and A Pirate Looks at Forty.
9. BluesBreakers with Eric Clapton, The "Beano" album. This album changed the face and sound of rock forever. Eric introduced the Les Paul/Distorted Marshall amp sound that we have heard ever since.
10. Rory Gallagher, Irish Tour '74. I had the great pleasure of hearing Rory live for the first time in 1975 in Scotland, doing many of the songs off this album. This, more than anything else, made a blues hound out of me.
11. George Harrison, All Things Must Pass. I had/have never been a Beatles fan. John Lennon in his egotism kept George's songs out of their mix for the most part. This album, with the talents of Eric Clapton, Billy PReston, Phil Collins, Alan White and others, demonstrated what a serious mistake that was. I can listen to this over and over and over.
12. The Band, The Last Waltz. What a way to say goodbye. Amazing performances by a multitude of fabulous musicians.
13. Wishbone Ash, Argus. This may well be my favorite album of all time. Sounds magazine called it the best rock album of the year in 1972 and Melody Maker called it the Top British album - and a couple of other albums that were released that year included Deep Purple's Machine Head and Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick! The twin guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner paved the way for the twin lead sound. Amazing songwriting and playing on this album. If you have never heard it, you have missed a treat of epic proportions.

Walk Don't Run -- The Ventures, everything this wanna-be picker needed to fall in love with melodic guitar and instumental guitar-driven music and begin and continue playing guitatr for decades

South Pacific -- motion picture / Broadway show soundtrack, the romance and tragedy of a place and time and clash of cultures and realities, and began a love of show tunes

Surfing -- The Ventures, everything you need to know to begin appreciating surf music and playing it

The Knack --- Motion Picture soundtrack, the same song, played 12 different ways, the essnce of how smooth jazz works

The Endless Summer -- The Sandals, motion picture soundtrack, mellow and exciting and dramatic surf music

Peer Gynt Suite -- Edvard Grieg, crystalization of classical / romantic music, Morning Mood, In the Hall of the Mountain King, wow!

Help! -- the Beatles, okay, it was sort of hokey, but hopelessly hip and said everything about why the British Invasion was so successful

Wheels of Fire -- Cream, did psychedelic blues ever get played better? This picker thinks not?

You Were On My Mind -- We Five, intro to folk-rock, at its finest early stages

Different Drum -- Stone Poneys, late wife's theme song, we walked to differnt drummers but hand in hand on the same path and sharing hearts while we were both in this realm

Thank you for reawakening the memories.
