Sorry, man... I had a bulldog years ago and they're super family dogs. Hang in there; soon enough you'll be able to tell stories about him and laugh, it will get much better.

To paraphrase J. Frank Wilson...

..."they've gone to Heaven
so I got to be good,
so I can see my doggies,
when I leave this world...."

Sorry for your loss. You gave that dog a great life, and that goes a long way.

In my original post, I had accidently put "do rush into getting another dog..." Of course, I meant "DON'T rush.." because mourning your friend is important in life.

These are some poems I found that express all of our feelings at the loss of our beloved friends and companions.

JUST MY DOG

He is my other eyes that can see above
the clouds; my other ears that hear above
the winds. He is the part of me that can
reach out into the sea.

He has told me a thousand times over that
I am his reason for being: by the way he
rests against my leg; by the way he thumps
his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he
shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.
(I think it makes him sick with worry when he
is not along to care for me.)

When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, he is joy unbounded.
When I am a fool, he ignores it.
When I succeed, he brags.
Without him, I am only another man. With him,
I am all-powerful.
He is loyalty itself.
He has taught me the meaning of devotion.
With him, I know a secret comfort and a
private peace. He has brought me understanding
where before I was ignorant.
His head on my knee can heal my human hurts.
His presence by my side is protection against
my fears of dark and unknown things.
He has promised to wait for me...
henever...wherever--in case I need him.
And I expect I will--as I always have.
He is just my dog.

A DOG HAS DIED

My dog has died.
I buried him in the garden
next to a rusted old machine.

Some day I'll join him right there,
but now he's gone with his shaggy coat,
his bad manners and his cold nose,
and I, the materialist, who never believed
in any promised heaven in the sky
for any human being,
I believe in a heaven I'll never enter.
Yes, I believe in a heaven for all dogdom
where my dog waits for my arrival
waving his fan-like tail in friendship.

Ai, I'll not speak of sadness here on earth,
of having lost a companion
who was never servile.
His friendship for me, like that of a porcupine
withholding its authority,
was the friendship of a star, aloof,
with no more intimacy than was called for,
with no exaggerations:
he never climbed all over my clothes
filling me full of his hair or his mange,
he never rubbed up against my knee
like other dogs obsessed with sex.

No, my dog used to gaze at me,
paying me the attention I need,
the attention required
to make a vain person like me understand
that, being a dog, he was wasting time,
but, with those eyes so much purer than mine,
he'd keep on gazing at me
with a look that reserved for me alone
all his sweet and shaggy life,
always near me, never troubling me,
and asking nothing.

Ai, how many times have I envied his tail
as we walked together on the shores of the sea
in the lonely winter of Isla Negra
where the wintering birds filled the sky
and my hairy dog was jumping about
full of the voltage of the sea's movement:
my wandering dog, sniffing away
with his golden tail held high,
face to face with the ocean's spray.

Joyful, joyful, joyful,
as only dogs know how to be happy
with only the autonomy
of their shameless spirit.

There are no good-byes for my dog who has died,
and we don't now and never did lie to each other.

So now he's gone and I buried him,
and that's all there is to it.

I have had to put down many dogs......I know the feeling........but like everything else.........time always helps, and it will get better. Give yourself some grieving time.......then......maybe go find another dog to become part of your family. That helps too.

:( I have had him for 7 years, since he was a puppy. he was an english bulldog and everybody loved him :  everybody could tell that he was more like a person, not an animal. he never did anything bad, he even loved my cat, and loved to just relax and cuddle with people. he had a collapsed lung and it caused him to have a heart attack.

Sorry you are having to deal with your loss. I went through this back in November with a greyhound I had rescued. He was 3 when I got him... 10 when I had to have him put to sleep due to an enlarged spleen and signs of cancer on the liver. Dogs (pets) do become family members, and should be treated so. It has been just over 3 months since I lost my pup... and I miss our walks and time together... just not ready to get another one yet. The days will ease, but your pup will not be forgotten in your heart.

Here's my old pack - they are my screensaver. They lived to be pretty old - around 12 years.

I miss them very much. They were a great pack!
Now I have these two yahoos:

Sounds like you were a great dog dad! No hurry, but know there are others without homes.
One of life's biggest honors is hosting animals!

This is an old thread, but I needed to bring it back 'cause... my dog died as well... I guess some lady must have been in to much of a hurry. He was ran over. By the way the blood fell, it looked like he died quickly.

Weasel: 9/1/00 - 4/26/09

Here's to him.
