My friends foreign car has a neat warning that pops up on the display in the winter when he has snow tires with his winter rims on.

Warning: one of more of your tires are missing :)

I'm surprised the car lets you put it in gear and drive off!

+1 cars were alot better when you could actually work on them your self without ten or fifteen tousand dollars of computer equipment

I can remember back when you could actually get inside the engine compartment to work on it!
cars seem engineered to make it impossible for you to even do regular maintenance. You shouldn't need to disassemble parts to get at all the plugs, or break the motor mounts and lift the engine to get at the oil pan. But in many of the newer models you can't even get in to do basic maintenance. Changing belts shouldn't take all afternoon, because you have to tinker to create room for your hands.

No kidding, to change a headlamp bulb on one side of my wife's car you need to take out the washer fluid reservoir and the battery.

Brilliant designs!

'Personally, loathe modern cars. Repeat, loathe. 'In this opinion the much-loved '93 Cherokee is too electronic and filled with gizmology.

Thank Heaven, most electric guitars can still be bought which have "50s-60s level" electronics and technology...

...plug in a 1/4 inch mono cable and drive.

At first I thought this sounded like a job for Click and Clack, but it looks like you took care of it yourself.

User friendly engineering is a thing of the past. We are in a world of ease and convenience - much to my chagrin. Things made easy cause continual problems.

I was talking to my Mother the other day and she reminded me that when she was a young girl she would get up in the morning and first thing that she would do is on a cold winter morning is shovel coal in the furnace, then hang out and wait for the thing to warm up..............no TV just radio - party line telephones (if you had one), etc.

Its a cushy world we live in now.........(maybe not as cushy ans we are lead to believe.

By the way the Stratocaster and Telecaster have changed very little since the 50's. Hmmm............

To re-boot the on board CPU you just need to disconnect the negative side of the battery for about 15 seconds. After re-connect the CPU will automatically reset. Seems like they started doing this in the 90's. Anytime you are working on your car(o2 sensor and the like) you need to disconnect the negative cable. Once you have done your work re-connect and the check engine light should go out. Your cpu must have developed a "hiccuup" and re-setting the cpu will probably fix the problem. I outsmarted the manufacture by removing the "Throttle body" and wiring harnesses for the cpu and installed a new intake and carburator in its place. Though not as fuel efficient, It works great.(I do not recommend this on todays new cars) Mine was an 89 chevy 4X4 w/a HP406 engine.
I also did this on a 92 chevy. Our state does not have emmision standards as strict as CA YET. Glad to hear problem solved 1st time I ever heard of that. Sorry ramble, ramble, ramble

In Europe, re-booting your car means it's your second parking offense, I think.

And the worst of it is, all of my friends thnk that's progress  They ask when I'm going grow up and get a car with all the electronic niceties and for the love of Pete, no more cars where you can actually (GASP) hear the motor ... especially when you step on it (which of course civilized people no longer do).

For the record, I have an 02 Escape 6 -- for a modern car, not bad. Simple dash, motor actually sounds like one, not designed to take grandma shopping and it moves decently for a non-perormance car. In short, not a rolling living room.

I dred the day when that's all that will be left, particularly now that they're leaving more and more of the driving decision making to the on board automation. In 10 years, you may find that you have no control over much of anything other than steering (provided of course that you don't over or under steer per the steering computers).

One of my old bosses was hired to develop a radar controlled braking system and the goal was to take much of the braking decision out of the driver's hands. The company was overly ambitious, so the project never made it out of prototype but they wanted it to be able to respond to something as small as a modest sized dog or a kid darting out as little as two car lengths ahead. It will come, I'm sure.

Some day, you'll just kick back, turn on the flat screen and your whisper quite "transporation device" will take you over the river and through the woods all on its own. No driver assistance needed or wanted!
