Still working on it after decades.

Some days, music blessedly flows freely for 50 songs, nonstop, never looking at a piece of music.

Other days this picker feels like a hippoptamus trying to play.

Just keeping at it....

I use Maya. It is largely why I started this topic actually. Everything I do in 3d gets budgeted out by how many hours it will take. 100 hours for a character, 50 hours for a bridge ... that sort of thing. I imagine that musicians don't really worry about time investment as much :D

My idea of proficient would probably be comfortable at open mic night. I am really enjoying my practice time these days, so I am not really concerned about how long that will take. I just thought it might be an interesting topic for discussion.

I have also gotten my 5 yo son one of those mini Les Paul electrics, but he isn't much interested in it yet. My 1 and a half yo daughter is very facinated by the guitar though and is starting to sing along, so I have high hopes for her 8)

I've been at it 40+ years, playing in bands most of that time. Still do. I played in my 7th grade talent show (Gloria and House of the rising sun lol) I can still walk into a music store and see some kid rippin off a bazillion notes per second and feel like I have wasted my whole life on this stupid instrument. I never feel like I know enough. I believe there are naturally gifted guitar players, and maybe not so gifted (me). BUT...practice always seems to be a common denominator for anyone to be "proficient" at anything. My fingers are sore pretty much on a regular basis. I hope I get the hang of this thing soon!

It doesn't matter if you can memorize a billion notes and play them all in three seconds. Most of those kids are just trying to show off. I'd rather hear someone play three notes with soul than someone play three thousand without it.

I know the term proficient with guitar is very open to interpretation

You're right about that! I've been striving towards that goal for over 40 years! During that time I have achieved a fair bit of good playing and a few moments of brilliance.

I think it comes down to this: The more you enjoy it, the more you do it. The more you do it, (practice), the better you get!

Cheers

40 years for me, too. Every once in a great while lightening strikes and I impress myself.

Anybody remember the board game Othello? They had the phrase,"It takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master." That is my answer to the question...

Hey FenderCats-

I find that I know more then I realize....at times I am better then I give myself credit for. I gig a couple times a month with my band ... plus we have a 4 hour band rehearsal 1 night a week. other then that I practice 3 hours a week on my own. I have been playing consistantly like this for 8 years. Still learning !!!!!!

I just use what I know and work it. Some nights I am blessed- Other nights I feel like my playing was just horrible- Those are the nights when some person from the bar buys me a beer and says "Thanks- You really nailed that"- You just dont know !

I will keep practicing till I am dead- I like playing my guitar - Others do too. Word of advice- You Got To Play Like You Mean It- Mean every note, bend, slide, and shift- Play like your life depends on it- It will release your soul and your music will pour out of you-

The Freeze

The Freeze

Just wondering if you like the Esteban - I just got one and haven't decided yet.

Well I like it mainly for the art work. The action was really high when I first got it. I replaced stings with D'Addarios then I shaved the saddle which proved to be too much resulting in fret buzz, I then replace the saddle and was more conservative with the shave job. It plays OK and stays in tune much better but still could have a better action. Tone is a little "muddy". So I guess I like it and plan to keep it and I got some guitar repair experience from it. Being a beginner, I would have not like receiving it as a first guitar.

so far, 27 years, with only the last 10 years playing all the time. I"m welcome at open mike night at the coffee house. I often play in an enclosed patio room. Neighbors have come up to me when I'm taking out the garbage and commented on how great I play the "horn," and are probably confused because it's a lot of old-school blues. Still, I know how limited I am.
