IMO I find Guitar Mags are geared toward Berekly Pre-grads, yet they boast on the cover"YOU CAN PLAY LIKE so-in-so-IN NO TIME!!" You can never play just like so-in-so, because as we all know it is an individual expression given by the player. All the nuances and feel belong to that player. However. You are intrigued,(or duped) so you buy it. I am self taught, and I am not stupid, but I feel like i need to take a college course to understand what they are talking about.
Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like this?

Hello Jayro,

I like guitar magizines.
I get a different one each month.
Favorites are Guitar Player & Vintage Guitar.
I'm not trying to play like so-and-so, just having fun.

Cheers.

I've been buying and reading those mags for 20 years and like you I can't figure out what they are talking about either. The lessons are too short and unrelated to any other lessons. The only thing I find them good for is the tab and picking up some help learning a song by Albert Aldort. I don't get anything Paul Gilbert is talking about. I've got some theory books I can't figure out either. I tried learning Pentatonic A and E but they all look the same to me. Maybe some day before I die.

Three old expressions come to mind when I read stuff like that which is akin to, "get rich quick" schemes:

1. "There's a sucker born every minute";
2. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is";
3. "Those who can do, do; those who can't, teach."

YMMV.

i read guitare mags like gitarre & bass, guitar and grand guitars.
i don't use the workshops from the guitar heros. helpful are the lead sheets and cd when i want to cover a song or the tech tips.

cheers :D

The problem I find is a lot of content is geared towards metal/shredding which I have no interest in. I subscribe to Guitar Player, which while it has some of that, it at least seems to give equal time to other styles and genres.

I get one magazine a month and that is the U.K. Guitar Magazine. It has a great tech story each month and lots of reviews and very few ads. The U.S. mags are loaded with junk writing and ads.

I only subscribe to Guitar Player Mag. I find some of it useful and entertaining. It has tons of advertising though!

Both points made in the OP's first sentence are incorrect.

Guitar mags aren't written at grad-school level or anything like it. And while most try to teach some aspects of one guitar hero's style or another, I can't think of any that have ever made an infomercial-style promise that you, too, could play just like Mickey Soandso in just 15 minutes a day.

Paper mags have it really farking HARD. They above all have to constantly, continually, sell gobs of advertising to stay afloat.

Period.

In order to sell on racks, they need spectacular covers and article-titles. To compete.

A college Marketing course can be quite educational and mind-opening.

Have fun.

I usually get Guitar World but for the past few months it's just the same people saying the same thing. It's 90% metal with just a few other artists thrown in there from time to time.

Now I like metal, but I also like other genres also. I mean there is only so much Kirk Hammet or James Hetfield I can stand.

Its just like those fitness mags you see all the time at grocery store checkout stands like "Flex" and "Shape" that have those pretty girls in bikinis with some caption like, "lose 150lbs in 3 days" or some such.

There is one reason why you see that kind of tripe on the cover of magazines, and one reason only: "It sells magazines"
