Me either... from site to site, I have found most have the same if not similar pricing.

I think those companies are too big to haggle with people over a few bucks. They usually have the lowest prices to begin with. I personally wouldn't waste my time calling them. They would probably just keep throwing their monthly payment plan option in your face.

There is one thing that I would probably haggle with them over, and that's a return policy.

so it looks as the consensus is that you probably won't be getting any successful bargaining done over the internet

Prolly not gonna get you much of a discount if any. You could do alot better with other reputable dealers that have a store front.

The online sights all sell the street price. YOu can get free shipping and no tax, which saves some money. I gave up trying to try to get a discount on anything at a GC or Sam Ash. I think once they lowered or matched a price. The salesman will say let me talk with my manager and comeback and say sorry that's the price. I always try to buy something I like and have played at a store, on ebay. I haven't been disappointed with any of the guitars I have bought and believe, me that is a lot of guitars.

On a thousand dollar guitar saving the sales tax is $50 in my state, if shipping is free (including returns and exchanges) buying on line is a savings. It's kind of rotten to use the local merchant to try out the guitars in person learn all about the products and then go buy on line but that seems to be how some people work the system. I want the local guy around personally.
