well first of all are you talking about your own songs or other peoples songs and if you're talking about other ppls songs can you read tab?

well if you're talking about other ppls songs i suggest learning how to read music notation real well and listening to the songs you're trying to play to get a beat/ melody.

if it's songs in your head i recommend learning how the notes on the guitar sound (try scales and finger excercises maybe) and learning other peoples songs should help you learn guitar sound and melodies.

if those don't answer your question or help you may be tone deaf (just joking. soorry if i offended :? )

well i hope that helps and when in doubt just practice!!!!

Learn chord theory, if you don't know it. It'll help you understand why people play what they do. What sound the different positions in the minor or major chords make. Then you will how the sound in your head is made and what note you use to make it.
