Don't worry, Orville's already pulled me up on that one. My brain was asleep in another room at the moment of that post, it seems...

I was surprized that it took 5 pages to get Metallica. While I really loved their 80's material, it hard to argue that they may be one of the last supergroups after the Black album came out. I would never have imagined back in the 80's that they would be at this level. They had to do something right to take completely underground hardcore music and bring it to the mainstream successfully. I am shocked when I hear Master of Puppets on the radio. A 9 minute thrash epic that is far from being radio friendly.

I agree with many of the posts here, so I am not going to repeat the great bands already mentioned but:

Since we are mentioning Canadian bands, which are still from North America, how was Rush missed?

Rush is one of the greatest bands regardless of origin.

For me, it's a real toss up between CCR and the Allman Bros. I think I would have to give the nod to the Allman's though, on sheer musical muscularity.

Too young to have seen the earliest incarnations, but I have seen a couple variants live, and they are still BY FAR the best sounding band I have seen live. They suffered the loss of some fine fine players, but they recovered, and recruited new people equal to the task into the family.

CCR just oozes R&R though. I think Fogerty is my favorite R&R singer. There are people with much better voices, and much better control and range, but to me he just typifies what a rock voice should be.

Also The Band (except Levon Helm,) were Canadian, and get the nod for best Canadian Band from me, with The Guess Who as a second choice.
