I'd go with Aerosmith, personally. But I couldn't say that some of the other bands already named don't deserve the title.

Wow, what a huge field to choose from. To this humble Englishman's taste The Allman Brothers are way, way out in the lead.

And who could forget - The Band?

Wasn't The Band a Canadian group?

Another vote for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They've been doing it for years and they can still rock the house. Catch one of their live shows and you'll see what I mean. Last tour, they had Steve Winwood as the opening act and Steve joined the Heartbreaker onstage for a couple songs -- incredible show! Their Soundstage DVD is another good way to see what they can do.

Lead guitarist Mike Campbell is incredible -- maybe not as flashy as some but, man, can he can PLAY! By the way, if you're into surf guitar, check out the Blue Stingrays CD. The band is actually the Heartbreakers minus Tom Petty and Mike Campbell shows another side of his skills with his tribute to surf music...

nrt4, thanks bro . i thought of booker t. and the mg's, jr. walker and the allstars, the bar-kays and we're not out of the sixties, one song from any of these posts so far, and, if it was some one new to rock they would say, "that is the best".
