Now we know about all the greats that come from England but what is the greatest American Rock Band.

In my opinion Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers although there current drummer is from England.

were to start i guess i won't drag every one back to the fifties and i'll rush through the sixties and just go with aerosmith but to quote a fav UK band of mine "start me up i'll never stop" i'm not forgetting anybody just playing along.

Pearl jam is great, but for me its a toss up between Grand Funk Railroad and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Wow the answer to that is very subjective. There have been so many; Van Halen, Aerosmith, Fog hat, Tom Petty to name just a few…If this counted on my personal opinion only I would have to say (KISS) as they been rocking for 35 ish’ years....when you say the greatest I have to assume we need to take into account all measures of the bands history. (the amount of musicians and fans influenced, hits, amount of airplay/ audience reached) That being said I have to say without a doubt it would be……..(BOSTON!!!!!) ……..here is why……although Kiss and Van Halen have influenced everyone; kiss never really ever had any airplay until 25 or 30 years after their start and then it was classic rock stations. VH had a lot more success with airplay and reached more audiences)….Boston had way more commercial influence than most…to this day you can’t turn on the Radio and not hear a Boston tune or 4 in a days time……the kicker is that Boston only ever recorded 3 Albums . (well and a 4th greatest hits with like 2 or 3 new songs)…every other band in this category has a huge catalog of songs and CD’s…I believe that should be included into scoring, Band longevity and amount of work go a long way but because you have been around for a while and have a lot of songs recorded does not mean you were an influence or had a heap of commercial success……..Yes for my money I think BOSTON…..hands down…. Every time I hear a Boston tune it is timeless, could have been recorded yesterday as opposed to almost 40 years ago…

I like VH too, but it has to be a version of the band that has both Diamond Dave AND Michael Anthony in it.

Okay, it was really The Allman Brothers Band as Mr. Bill has stated.

I think longevity has to be a huge part of this discussion. not only the ability of the band to persist over time but to keep its core group, if not all original members.

In that line of thinking I have to rule out Van Halen. In the end it's really all about Eddy.

I love Tom Petty but how do the Heartbreakers stand up to this test?

REM? Huge fan, but they lost Bill Berry a while ago ... but you could also say the creative core is really Stipe, Buck, and Mills.

I think Aerosmith passes this test.

Hate to say it (and I'm even from Sayreville), but Bon Jovi has been around a while too. I think only the bassist has been replaced.

Who else passes this test?

Wow, what a huge field to choose from. To this humble Englishman's taste The Allman Brothers are way, way out in the lead. Also got lots of time for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Not so vital to me, but it would be hard to argue with anyone who wanted to name The Eagles, too.

I suppose JJ Cale qualifies as a solo act, but his band sure sounded like a band to me, one happy night in a small club in Boston MA. An all time great show...

And who could forget - The Band?

Cheers - C
