Personally, I mark the start of "alternative" with "Wolves, Lower" off REM's first EP.

But the song that kept getting voted most definitive of that period was "How Soon Is Now" by The Smiths.

And a band that sometimes gets called "alternative" but most definitely is not is Matchbox 20. Somewhere between Nirvana and them the term lost all meaning.

the term alternative...as i rember was never used to describe early rem or the smiths....as i mentioned before the term alternative was used by djs to market new non mainstream rock and roll in the early 90's....and the term grunge was created by journalist and music industry promoters to market seattle bands who had been affiliated with subpop several years before the term grunge was coined.

Okay, so, then, maybe we need to clarify the question. Is it "one song that is emblematic of the songs that dj's/industry marketers/members of the music press actually used the word 'alternative' to describe", or is it "one song that best exemplifies the musical characteristics that the songs dj's etc used the word 'alternative' to describe have in common"?

Sure, REM and the Smiths were before the term was commonly used, but I'd call them alternative in the same way that I would agree that The Stooges album from 1969 was the first punk record.

Or does that just kick off a different debate? :-)

pick any of the clash's hits.

White riot's my fave. Or maybe some ramones, subterranean jungle maybe. Theres a lot more to the 80's/ 90's than mtv would have you believe. Dead kennedy's frankenchrist is a great surf/punk album. 'Soup is good food' or 'Mtv get off the air' are a prerequisite for any alternative music in modern culture debate.
