Well, if you're going by most easily recognized by the general public, I'd think you'd have to go with something really mainstream.

Personally, I'd recognize some Led Zeppelin solos (like Stairway to Heaven) pretty quickly.

I'm not all too sure about bass solos, but the bass in Pink Floyd's Money is pretty memorable..

When someone says Bass Solo I instantly think "Bass Solo, Take One".

(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth

Guitar Solo is harder, I get about four or five in my head at the same time when I think "Guitar Solo"

Stairway to Heaven
Hotel California
Free Bird
Eruption
Back In Black

I wouldnt say its my personal favorite but the 2nd solo in "flirting with disaster" has got to be among the most epic.

Being a long time primus fan I'd have to say my favorite bass line (not solo) is from "My Name is Mud". But, buy far and away the best Bass solo has to be "YYZ" by rush, followed by "Wont Get Fooled Again" by The Who Followed by "Hysteria" by Muse.

For guitar I'm torn between Comfortably Numb and Time by Pink Floyd.
For bass The Lemon Song by Led Zepellin.
