In my opinion the greatest use of a wah wah pedal was by Jimmy Page on Dazed and Confused from the Song Remains the Same soundtrack. Not only is it amazing to listen to, but it was a major turning point in my life when I first heard it on vinyl when I was 15.

What I like is the camera man was good and showed him working the Wah.

IMO, Clapton and Hendrix were the best of the earliest users.

Steve Vai has done some great "modern" wah stuff.

I don't know many people who extensively used the wah pedal, and I think Kirk Hammett uses one of those (what I call) - an automatic wah that you flip the switch on.

Otherwise, I'd say SRV or Carlos Santana.

Jimi actually plugged his Wah in backwards on one song to get a siren sounding effect.

Have you ever tried that?

If it's safe (and what could possibly go wrong?), I think I'll give it a try.
I suppose the amp's gotta be on 11 for full effect?

Personally I have never tried it.

I like the runaway effect on echo units, but since this is a Wah-wah thread, I'll have to give that backwards thing a try.

I'm gonna have to go with Michael Schenker. His half open wah solos are still some of my best loved guitar work.

Yes David Gilmour did it too on "Echoes"

i dont know if it is safe but the amp dosent have to be on 11 i can get the sound with my amp on 1!!

any way here is a tutorial on how to do it:
The “seagull” effect in the mid-section is achieved by using a wah wah and reversing the input/outputs.
Note that this effect doesn’t work that well with humbuckers or active pickups pickups. It’s best achieved with either Vox or Cry Baby wahs.
1. Connect the guitar to the OUTPUT and your amp/next effect to the INPUT on the wah wah,- reversed connection.
2. Set the pickup switch on the guitar in the 4. position (2. position from the bottom). Make sure that all 3 knobs are on 10.
3. Turn on the wah wah and let it stay with the “heel” all the way down. Turn the lower tone knob “off”. You should now hear a loud feedback.
4. Adjust the pitch of the feedback by carefully rolling down the lower tone knob (farthest from you). You should hear that the tone is pitched down. Somewhere between 2-3 the tone fades and by making a really slow fadeout you can achieve the “laughing” effect.
5. Combine these techniques with switching the pickup switch up and down from position 1-5 and by adjusting the pitch on the wah wah.

Gotta vote for Hendrix and Clapton in Cream.

But here's some other good ones...

Terry Kath of Chicago Transit Authority - I'm a Man

Here's a live version...

Traffic - Shootout at the Fantasy Factory. Who's on guitar here? Maybe Winwood?

C'mon now ..... Hendrix's use of the wah-wah was in another league of its own. Sure, Clapton had some nice moments - particularily " Presence of the Lord" and others too had theirs. BUT.... Hendrix has been dead almost
38 years and the stuff he did still towers over much of the music since.
"Rainy Day... Dream Away" is a classic where the wah sounds like it is speaking after some funky jazz-blues sax, drums and electric piano. Who has topped that for originality and creativity ??
