Is anybody else incensed about Fender's price increases? I don't see any debate about it.
The price of the standards is up 38%. That's including the 11% increase at the beginning of 2009.
I realize that the cost of everything is going up. But a 38% increase is ridiculous.
Well, I'll be selling my Hot Rod P-Bass and not replacing it with another Fender. G&L's have been looking bettter anyway. I got a brand new American fretless L-2000 last year for $900.
Fender is just using the economy crunch as an excuse to keep up with Gibson, price-wise.

First, Welcome to the forum! You are late to the party as this subject has been discussed many times here. Do a search on it. Second, I don't believe Fender cares about keeping up with Gibson with thier prices! Just my opinion only. No disrespect intended.

My comment about Fender keeping up with Gibson is that I feel they're pricing themselves out of the market. Just like Gibson has in recent years.
And the purists will scream "would you rather have them go out of business?".
I wouldn't want to see anyone go out of business, that creates unemployment.
I just don't find that the cost of my quality of life has gone up 38%, so how is Fender justifying such a huge increase?

Really. When was the last time Fender had ANY price increase? It seems that the outgoing price structure has been in place for at least five years without any increase, maybe even longer...

Hi srbass: what's the inflation rate in the US at present? How does that compare with Fender's price increase?

So thinking that through, what conclusions might we draw?

Dunno if those thoughts make me a "purist" - but I'm fine with it if it does...

Cheers - C

I'm confused. The numbers you guys are throwing out there are big yet I have been in my local shops and can honestly say what I see is little to no increases at all. And one of those shops is Guitar Center. I'm sure they turn a lot of inventory and any increase would have shown up by now.

Our fed is trying to get our inflation rate up to 1.7%. So to answer your first question. Directly from the Times online...the annual inflation rate in the US for 2008 was officially 0.1%, and is projected to be negative for 2009.

What this all boils down to......is the free market will have the final word. People who think the price is too high......won't buy. People who don't mind the increase all that much, will. That is how I've always operated. If I don't like the product.....I move on to another product. If I'm still willing to....and able to.....I'll continue to buy what it is, I want. So.....in the end.....it'll all work itself out. I have noticed, though......that Fender seems to increase it's price on amps by about $100 a year. At least lately. I bought an amp about two years ago....for about $600. It's now up to $800.

some people like the song mercedes benz- janis joplin , while others are more how much is that doggie in the window-rosemary clooney, check out 'version of little wing' thread for price perspective.

Prices have gone up on everything, not just guitars...so I don't see why just Fender price increases are getting so much attention....

...I'm incensed that every time I go to the grocery store that I seem to be spending more money for less food.

...I'm incensed that every time I get an electric bill, even though I am using less kilowatt hours per month than last year that there is a "Fuel Adjustment Cost" so I am paying more this year for less energy than last year.

...I'm incensed that every time someone sneezes in the Middle East, gas prices rise.

...I'm incensed that every time I use an ATM that is not for my bank, that ATM fees seem to keep rising, even though technically they should all be free because they are networked together much like the internet.

...I'm incensed that the job market and economy suck since I am completing an electronics technology program in May.

...Am I incensed at Fender? No, they have taken it upon themselves to do what they need to do in this economy to help them remain in business, unlike other industries who p!ssed all their money away and are looking for the government to help them with problems, many of which could have been prevented...So the rising price of a guitar is the least of my worries since I have a mortgage and bills to pay in a time when there is record unemployment and layoffs. If I don't have a job first, to pay my bills, then I won't have any place to put a guitar anyways, and I don't want to be the homeless guy under the bridge with a Fender Hot Rod '52 Telecaster in my shopping cart full of empty cans...

SRBASS In 2007 Rickenbacker had a 25% price increase on all guitars.Hardly a wimper could be heard because a Rick lover understands the economy.Same thing with Fender they had not increased prices since 1999.If you change brands just to punish Fender, you,ll never really be happy with brand x. That,s the way with Fender when you love em its for life.
