I got the program on Mike's recommendation too. Top class advice from a top class bloke. I have no plans to record with it yet, but find it a great tool for storing idea's before i forget them. Its also great for working on harmony parts.

The way I recorded, I put the mike in front of the amp and put the amplified speakers on top of the amp. Then opened the backing track and quickly hit record on audacity. Then played a solo over the progression. In order to export the file you will need to download the Lame_enc.dll file(free download) this enables you to be able to burn the disc as an Mp3(instead of .wav)
After I played around with the program, I think it is really cool! And It sounds really good. :D

8) I'm glad that you guys like it. Another cool thing you can do with it is convert old songs from cassette tapes to mp3s. Just run a 1/8" mini from cassette player to mic in and set Audacity levels, then export as mp3.

BTW, there is new "beta" version out now also, but I like to wait until they work the bugs out.

If you have a large .wav file, you can send or receive it with www.yousendit.com (it's free, but you need to register).

The web is loaded with free wav files that you can dump into Audacity and jam with, then export as mp3s.

This is another cool feature : 8)

I gave the beta a try, and so far it's been pretty stable. I don't record with it, though. I use it to trim my mixes and convert formats.

Some of the effects are pretty good, but it takes a little time to tweak them for what you want to achieve.

The "reverse" effect gives you a cool Hendrixy sound, but don't overdo it. The compressor, EQ and normalize can add some *sparkle* to your tracks as well as smooth out the spikes and valleys.

The wahwah is kinda cool to edit in for short passages and in some cases can "fix" something so you don't have to re-track.

The cross fade-in and fade-outs can add a feeling of a much higher end production.

Tremelo, Delay and Gverb (reverb) is kind of hard to dial in, but it can be done if you have some patience.

The help index is pretty good and if you can't find a solution for whatever you need there, there is always the audacity users group.

Actually there are several users groups on the web, but this one has been my 'go-to' link when I can't find within the software itself's help.

http://audacityusers.ning.com/

Enjoy!

Just an idea........but if you're only looking to record ideas (like I do), because you forget them the next day......I just use a very small digital recorder. You can get them at places like Best Buy very inexpensively. I have a Sony IC recorder. It sounds like crap by itself.....but if I plug in headphones, it's not all that bad.....and I get my ideas the next day, after I've forgotten them. But...for actual recording......I'd get something else. Just a thought..........

Im exactly the same mate, ive forgot my own birthday before now. Does a digital recorder transfere onto pc. I send a lot of idea's by email to a band i quit ages ago. At the moment i just get the idea's onto the pc via its inbuilt mic. Poor quality i know, but i despise recording i certainly dont want to spend money on mic's and usb interfaces.

Solution

You can run a short patch cord with 1/8" ends from a digital cassette recorder headphone out (or even a $30 Radio Shack model) to your mic input of your computer and then tweak it in Audacity.

If you record it in mono, under Audacity's "edit" , you can select "duplicate" and then easily change one track to stereo-L and the other to stereo-R just by clicking under track name.

Then you can try separating by 40% right and 40% left, cross fading, etc.

Where there's a will, there's a way.
