The other night I watched one of several Biography's that have been done on Freddie Mercury. In my opinion Freddie Mercury had one of, if not the best voice ever to sing Rock-N-Roll. I was reminded that Freddie did an album called "Barcelona" with Opera singer Montserrat Caballe and that Freddie's last live performance was with Montserrat Caballe.
I listened to Barcelona tonight and was very touched. Montserrat Caballe has a wonderful voice and her singing of songs that were written/co-written by Freddie Mercury was fabulous. Freddie's singing on this album was his best ever.
Even if you are not an Opera fan I highly recommend you listen to this album.

This guy deosn't get enough credit for the roles he played in the overall Queen experience.
He was the main force in composition, he played the piano, and guitar, and in the last years, basically abandoned playing to concentrate on the stage show.
There is that footage that shows real-time collaboration between him ans Brian May, just before the actual recording of the same track.

The chord sequences and arrangements are unique, whether you play guitar, keyboard or sing.
Those few that can wear all three hats can tell you hard it is to do all three, sometimes singing and playing at the same time.

Freddie was a great singer, songwriter and musician. Having seen him playing piano was very inspiring. On top of all that, I'd say he was one of the greatest performers in rock music also.

And his lyrics ... have you ever really listened to "Let Me Entertain You"? He was an amazing talent.

Once in a while, the old lady will turn on IDOL. One of the biggest criticisms I have of EVERYONE I've seen on there is their inability to own a stage. Freddie had the greatest stage presence of any singer I've ever seen. The man owned the stages he was on. There was no doubt as to where to focus your attention. There won't be another like him.

I was never a Queen fan and the only thing I like about them was Brian May's guitar playing. In my opinion Richard Manuel has the best voice in Rock history.

Freddie did most of his own backup vocals. His pitch and tone were so perfect on his harmonies that no one could match it. That is why the harmonies are so tight and unique sounding on the Queen albums. He was a very unique and complex guy. Truly a talent that will never be matched.

I saw Queen live in 1980, 1982 and 1986. Freddie Mercury always put on a incredible show. He is sorely missed. :(

I watched that on Biography the other night and it was good. He was was the Ultimate Showman with the Vocals to back it up. The mix of there musical compositions where amazing and how he was able to blend so many styles.

Its funny, I recently watched an old concert(guess it had to be old, didn't it?) , I think it was in Montreal. His vocal performance on "The Show Must Go On" was spellbinding. He was definitely one of (if not THE ) best singers in rock.

I think though that the best 'voice to sing Rock and Roll' for me has always been John Fogerty. He didn't have nearly the range, or control. He wasn't as technically adept. He wasn't as versatile as Freddie. But his voice purely oozes rock and roll.

Freddies was almost too good, or pure a singer to have that certain edge or feel, that I think of as a 'rock and roll' voice. no whiskey soaked tones from him.Freddie was always awesome, but he didn't 'always rock'

Freddie's always going to be the singer in my "fantasy rockband". You'll very seldom hear him miss a note on a live show - and he was the ultimate frontman.

We'd all kill to get a guy like him standing at the front of our band's stage...

Cheers - C
