I want a Strat but just can't afford a MIM or better. I just picked up a used Indonesia Squier, about 10 years old, skunk striped neck, maple fret board, all electronics work. Pups seem a bit "off" but I am assuming that they are low end.......

I paid $75 for it - seemed like a decent price for a working Squier - any thoughts?

Tele or Strat? It doesn't matter just figure out how you want it to sound and find some pickups to match. Don't be scared to route it for a humbucker if that is what you want considering the price you paid. Just don't spend a whole lot of money on it. Look around for name brand bargain pickups.

Good luck,

GFS has VERY cheap pups, and I have heard lots of good things about them. This is a perfect application for them, and probably better than any DD's. Just my opinion...

Cool, I have one the same, only with a rosewood board. It's overall a nice guitar, although the pickups aren't so great. I changed mine to Texas Specials.
And it's every bit as real as a Fender.

Well, yeah, these are great pups. No argument there, but they are generally not too cheap, when you can only afford $75 for the guitar. Great suggestion, though...

Another option is picking up some used ceramic pups from a MIM std off eBay. Everybody and their mother swap those out. You can get those cheap. Annnnd they're very good pups (at least they'd be miles better than whatever you got in there now). Besides, you can tell your buds, "Yeah, I decided to drop some Fender ceramic pickups in my Strat..."

Are Texas Specials Fender made pups?

Yeah, I meant in the future. I went five years with stock pups in my Squier. I got the Texas Specials because I worked my butt off all night and all day at a garage sale.

And yes, Texas Specials are Fender Custom Shop pickups. They're one of the best Fender makes. So they sort of make up for the rest of the Squier and cost twice as much as the guitar itself.

My thought is.
For £55 you got a good guitar. Play it tll it gets old then look to mod it.

They're worth the money. You'll know when you need to upgrade. Whether its to mod it to improve it, or whether its to buy a better guitar. Just enjoy the hell out of it for now.

Almost everyone started on a less than top of the line instrument. and I have to say the starter stuff seems way better than what I had available.
