While reading the banter about age , music, and technique vs. shredding etc., I was thinking about the first song that I learned on the guitar..................I was at a party in 1980(?) and this guy was playing Needle and the Damage Done by Neil Young and I thought to myself "I can play that"!! So the next day I pulled out the ole Sears Silvertone (it had been in mothballs for 10 or 12 years) and bought a Neil Young easy guitar book and went to work. That was my start into seriously learning to play guitar - oh, and my second song learned was Love Hurts by Nazareth.

How about you all - when did it all begin and what song was the first that you learned???

I had been playing a melodica in 6th grade when a friend had been given a guitar for a gift. We took turns learning how to play chords and then learned to sing and play a bunch of old Stephen Foster songs, then came the Bonanza theme and one thing led to another....

Christmas 1980, I was 8. I unwrapped a Global Student-sized Acoustic, my Dad taught me the Opening to "Baby Plaease Don't Go" and the Rhythm and Melody to Pipeline (I forgot about Pipeline 'till he reminded me the other day). Then "House of the Rising Sun" and I put it down for a few years till I picked up the Bass at 16, first song on Bass was Either Chuck Berry's "Long Distance Information" or "Kansas City". Then "For Whom The Bell Tolls" - by Mettalica.

The rest is a blurr of Tapes and Tab.

I think you would have to say first song you learned that you liked. I played a lot of classical stuff I didn't care for. My first pop song was Baby I Love Your Way by Peter Frampton.

Speaking of Cliff of Dover - my 10 year old kid is hip to that song. I was stunned when he brought it up!!! Seems as though Guitar Hero is teaching the kids something worthwhile................

Sunshine of Your Love by Cream and it's still one of my favorites to play.

Poly by Nirvana. I still enjoy playing it to this day, albeit in a more refined manner.

i had that book :)
never learned a friggin' thing from it... i had better luck with my chord chart and song books with the chord letters and/or charts on the sheet music.
my first guitar was a hondo acoustic... can't remember what the first song was, but i'm leaning toward neil young's "heart o' gold". had a blues harp and dylan stand too, and it's still one of my staples.
