It could be some kind of EQ or filter... but it sounds to me like simple room tone, as if the amp (something with a small speaker, perhaps, to get that nasal tonality, maybe one of those Supros Page liked) was in a square, medium sized, fairly live room and then mic'ed from a good distance, like 12 feet or more. That would sure do it.

I thought of that and then tried to find it live somewhere so I could see if there was a difference in an open air environment, but I can't find it live.

I have heard it live, but can't remember. lol

According to

* Led Zeppelin: Dazed and Confused: The Stories Behind Every Song, by Chris Welch, ISBN 978-1-56025-818-6
* The Complete Guide to the Music of Led Zeppelin, by Dave Lewis, ISBN 978-0-7119-3528-0

the song was never performed live.

Really? Well, that changes things up then.
I could have swore I did hear it live though.

So it definitely is just placement and room acoustics then I guess.

Sounds like double tracking with a filter and little bit of flanging.
Page was also heavy into different mic techniques and room acoustics.

Page may not have the best technique, but he was a master at getting the perfect tone!
Great sounding band all the way around! Hard to beat JPJ & Bonzo!!

Strangest thing, I recently was trying to find info on Jimmy`s equipment, you can sometimes find info at wikipedia and I just found this:

"Houses of the Holy" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin from their 1975 album Physical Graffiti. The track is a mid-tempo rock song, heavy on bass and featuring a distinctive Jimmy Page guitar riff. In order to create the layered guitar introduction and fade-out, Page used a Delta T digital delay unit.[1] The squeak of John Bonham's drum pedal can be heard throughout the song.

I just listened to the song and didnt hear it.

I ripped out my CD from the remasters collection I have and played it.
Still didnt hear it.
I have some older stuff, but I figured clarity was paramount here.

So as per usual when I want to hear something I have thrown my headphones on.
I am hearing something. A faint squeek. I dont know though, it may be that I am hearing it because I am trying to hear it.
