Greetings Everyone,
I usually hang out over in the Strat forum and this is my first visit here. Seems like there is a wide range of topics discussed here so I thought I would throw something out just to gauge the response.
I admittedly am in my 50's and cut my teeth on the musicians of the 60's, with Hendrix being my eternal favorite. As I have listened to the music of the last 10 years or so, it seems to me those who are considered latter-day "guitar gods" seem to concentrate more on how fast they can shred versus getting the maximum amount of emotion from every note. Don't get me wrong, I fully respect and admire all of the years of training and hard work that goes into accomplishing such a technique. But when I listen to all of my favorite guitarist (Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Beck), who in their own way could all play incredibly fast, it is much more enjoyable to me to actually hear every note than to recover from audio whiplash trying to keep up with the likes of Yngwee and others. Should I just go ahead and make my reservation for the old folks home or are there others who feel like this?

I'm 16 and I totally agree with you. I wouldn't have a few years ago though. Then I saw SRV (on TV, of course) and from there I've realized that there's way more to playing guitar then just how fast you can go and how much you can impress your guitar playing friends, which was basically what I was doing at the time. It seems to me that lots of people today (I won't mention any names) play with just their heads. There's no heart in it, so it sounds stale. Also, kids my age tend to listen to music to be cool. So they go for the newest and/or the heaviest and/or the fastest thing they can find and bash "what my parents listen to". Once I got out of listening to certain music to be cool and listened to other styles, like blues and jazz (my new favorites) more openly I found that I could appreciate them just as much as metal or rock. You know what's funny? I enjoy being on here talking about music with people my parents age more then I enjoy talking about music with people my age. When I talk to people my age they usually just say, "I don't like old music" or "Who's Albert King?".

me too! im 12 and most ppl in my middle school tell me cream and red hot chili peppers are foods not bands (rhcp isnt even that old!!!). but all of em like rap but me and they dont know who bob marley is.

just makes me think that this is how all those ppl from "back in the day" felt when young ppl listened to jimi and all the other grates

this generation of mine is sorry

my dads says i act (musical taste) like i should have born 20-40 years ago (the 20-40 is cause i like newer bands like green day and weezer ect but also love the classics)

keep it real-peace!

With that amount of maturity at your age, you will go far my young friend.
As far as enjoying yourself among us geriatrics, I always preferred the company of people older than myself when I was younger. It was so cool to talk to people who had already been your age and were willing to let you know what was ahead.

Nice to know I won't have to use my AARP card quite yet. Here's another question for you. If you had to pick one, and only one, guitar solo from your favorite guitarist, what would it be? As I said in my original post, Hendrix is far and away my favorite, and the choice for me is easy despite all of the great solo's he did; the lead run in Machine Gun from the original release of Band Of Gypsies. That recording was done 40 YEARS AGO this last New Years Eve and nothing has ever reached into my soul like it does. It just makes you want to scrunch up your face and twist your body in every different direction at once (you all know what I mean as guitarists). Who does that for you?

Respect the Wind (EVH) Twister Soundtrack. Besides being able to relate (getting hit by a hurricane in S. Florida) I think Eddie reached a milestone with the culmination of all his years of playing. A synthesis of time and...yeah whatever!

Someday I want to learn that song so I can play it in the aftermath of a hurricane. It is an awesome feeling when the wind stops and the power stops and there's just a silent moment as the sky changes colors back to blue. What a great moment to plug in a (battery powered) amp and SHRED!

I was born in the early 70's. I am 37 and have to admit, I like the shedders of the 80's and 90's. But I do have to admit that I do prefer technique to speed now. I have been tinkering with some Bluesy-type Metal riffs, but can shred too. I do like the classics mentioned here in this thread such as Hendrix, Zepplin, SRV, ect along with Metallica, Rush, and Maiden. I have also own Buddy Holly and BB King CD's. I guess my playing style is a fussion of the musical genres for the past 50 years. :)

Good to know I'm not alone. :D I like Cream too. I'm glad they're on Guitar Hero, because it seems like that's the only place where most of my friends hear good songs like "Sunshine of Your Love". I like new bands too, with the exception of rap. And I feel like I should be at least 20 years older too, because of the music I like. People my parent's age are so lucky, they actually got to listen to Hendrix and people like that when it was new!

My brother's 12 and I sort of bring home the music for him. When I brought home metal, he loved it. When I got into classic rock, he didn't really like it at first but now he loves it. And when I started listening to SRV he hated it, but one day he just changed his mind out of blue, so we basically listen to the same music now. I've been trying to get him to sit down and try playing guitar or bass, but he's just way too hyper.

I'm 49 (Gasp!) and as much as I love Metal, I'm still influenced by mostly a lot of the European and English Classic Rock Guitarists. Guys like Jimmy page, Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schencker, and of course Angus Young. I never really was a fan of guys like Yngvie (Look at me) Malmsteen or Steve Vai or any of those guys. I do love a lot of the blues players with SRV being my all time favorite with Buddy Guy and Leslie West coming in right behind.

Me too...
For some reason in the 80s music (main stream) did'nt have the same appeal to me. The bands and artists from the "Old School" got me through, but the "new stuff" just didnt work so well for me. Question...Will boys to men ever be classic??? :D and if the do can I be put to rest

Add me to the club. I came of age as a guitarist in the late '60s and early '70s. It was a great era for popular music and guitar.

I'd still like to learn sweep picking, though.

We're a little closer in age, so maybe that's why I don't mind him too much.

You listened to better music than I did when I was little. Up until I was about seven I listened to nothing but the classical music channel and the country music channel. I really didn't get into rock until I was about eight or nine. And it was alternative rock, like Nirvana. I got my first guitar when I was eleven, but I didn't really try to learn to play it until I was thirteen. And yeah, I was like always in the backseat banging on my air drums and singing.

Yeah, but people get old and die. Yes had to cancel the show I was going to go to because of "health issues". And I'll never get to see Hendrix or SRV. Ya'll who did are luckier than kids my age in that way. Plus you guys had to learn by ear, you didn't have youtube and tab sites. I think that if I had started playing by ear I'd be a better guitar player now.

Me too, that kind of music is the first kind of rock music I liked and it's what got me playing guitar. And I still listen to it. And I still play Smells Like Teen Spirit over and over.

I sort of learned with tabs. I can read music for drums, but not for guitar at all. Recently I've been trying to stay away from tabs and play by ear, and I'm doing OK. It just takes longer than reading tabs, but it's worth it in the long run.

Fast playing has its place in songs; It should emphasize or highlight a passage….in writing you would use punctuation. What kind of fool would you be if you put an exclamation point after word. And therefore endless speed shredding for the sake of fill it also ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong there is a market and an audience out there for it. Guys like Malmsteen, Moore, Via, John 5, and the such; go ahead and do what you do..If you someone is buying the records and there making money from it then cool….Music is cool that way, if you don’t care entirely for something than you change the station or dont buy the record. I got to admit these days I would much rather listen to a Buddy Guy of a David Gilmour than a Jason Becker or Tony MacAlpine, but some days I just need to have Van Halen eruption or Joe Satriani surfin with the alien……the trick is the use of Modes….If you can take the listener on an emotional journey with in the confines of your song, then you are an artiest, speed or no speed…..If you cannot then you make rhythmic noise…….that is just my take on it, and age has nothing to do with it..... :D
