Greetings Everyone,
I usually hang out over in the Strat forum and this is my first visit here. Seems like there is a wide range of topics discussed here so I thought I would throw something out just to gauge the response.
I admittedly am in my 50's and cut my teeth on the musicians of the 60's, with Hendrix being my eternal favorite. As I have listened to the music of the last 10 years or so, it seems to me those who are considered latter-day "guitar gods" seem to concentrate more on how fast they can shred versus getting the maximum amount of emotion from every note. Don't get me wrong, I fully respect and admire all of the years of training and hard work that goes into accomplishing such a technique. But when I listen to all of my favorite guitarist (Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Beck), who in their own way could all play incredibly fast, it is much more enjoyable to me to actually hear every note than to recover from audio whiplash trying to keep up with the likes of Yngwee and others. Should I just go ahead and make my reservation for the old folks home or are there others who feel like this?

Plenty of us here feel the same way pal. I'm 58.
Learned my trade back in the sixties. My all time favourite guitarist is Jeff Beck but plenty of others like, Clapton, Green and Page are up there as well. These guys can be as technical as anybody and speed doesn't equal good.
Like you say, some of the slower stuff requires soul, feel and emotion and all of those guys had spades of that.
So keep rockin' man, like the rest of us..... 8)

G'Day.

That's the beauty of the guitar. There's so many ways it can be played (well) that it appeals to so many people. A lot of other instruments on the other hand pretty much limit the type of music they are suited to whereas the guitar can do anything from jazz, blues, country, classical, rock, folk, death metal...

Personally I prefer a slower approach which highlights the tones of every note and some good, bluesy rhythm playing but I can still appreciate the work that goes into shredding. I was having this same conversation at a friend's place last night. We were putting my Tele through its paces (my friend has a lot more gear than I and much more skill also). The whole time his brother kept asking me if I've got the latest Metallica album, and have I seen the latest Malmsteen video and so on. He couldn't believe that I wasn't really interested in it. I have nothing against it, I just don't really enjoy it and don't want to play it. My friend on the other hand loves everything and plays everything. His guitar arsenal includes a Les Paul a Strat and a Kramer "shred" guitar. After trying my Tele he wants to get one of those now. I'd say he's got all bases covered.

I'd also say that one of the reason's he's such an accomplished guitarist (in my opinion anyway) is that he listens to ALL styles and tries to play a bit of everything. The more you listen, the more you learn. But at the end of the day its all up to personal tastes. I'm sure if you go onto a classical music forum (if such a place exists) you'll probably find people discussing the differences between Mozart and Chopin etc.

Don't know if any of this makes sense, I'm probably just rambling on now...

Greetings and Salutations Fenderheads-

I agree with the original post. I respect those who shred scales at blazing speeds- Its just not my thing- To listen to or to play.

I'm 41, and I am in a band- We play classic rock and Blues based rock originals. We gig several times a month and the people ...no matter what age or musical identity...they love our stuff. You just cant beat a good soulful song that identifies with everyday stuff.

I agree.
An amazing time to be growing up with music. I feel very fortunate in that regard.

Hi FarRider, this year I'm in the area 51 as I like to say. Emotion is the key word for me. I listen to music that moves me, but emotion can also be a game or curiosity as, where is he going with that, where is it gonna land? If a speedy lick can improve a song, if an out of nowhere riff can justify itself by focusing my attention, it's cool, I love that. I listen to many genres of music and there is a few that I don't like and never listen to. I don't bash them, they just don't get my attention, like they say, life is too short enjoy what you got. I'm with you on this topic, glad you started it. And forget about the old folks home. 8)
Claude.

I'm closing in on 40 and I am becoming a 'crusty ole bastid'

i think what's funny is, unlike previous generations my complaint with the younger folks at work music choices is that its all sooooo boring. The fast stuff is just fast, no melodies really anymore. R & B well, compare Seal, and marvin gaye, and that's all anyone needs to say about that.

its like when I was young people would complain about our loud and raunchy music. Now even when I hear new metal, it makes me feel like i might fall asleep driving.

Rock and roll has been a source of conflict like that since the beginning. Older people not liking the energy. But now so much of the new stuff is just stale. And plain boring.
